Recent Switch Successor Codename May Not Be Its Actual Codename

A knowledgeable Nintendo Switch researcher has chimed in regarding the recent leaks about the Switch successor's codename of Muji, stating that it is a placeholder and won't be its codename. After several rumors regarding a successor to the Nintendo Switch console, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that the company would be making an announcement about it later this fiscal year. With the confirmation of the Switch 2 being real, a new series of rumors have kicked up regarding its possible features, release date, and even its codename.

The most recent rumors regarding the Nintendo Switch successor console is its codename. According to leaks from the Famiboard forum, the Nintendo Switch successor's codename will be "Muji," claiming to have found this codename by sifting through code for a Switch 2 software development kit. The name itself is Japanese for "plain," with some users connecting the idea that the Switch 2 will have a more streamlined and minimalist design, based on a Japanese retailer who specializes in the same thing for its product. However, a more knowledgeable Switch researcher has stepped in to say this likely isn't the console's actual codename.

These findings were posted by @ScriesM, or Michael, a Nintendo Switch hacker and custom firmware developer for Atmosphere, hactool, and other reverse engineering tools for the Switch. According to Michael, the leaked Muji codename used for the Nintendo Switch successor is supposedly a placeholder to avoid leaking the console's actual codename. He notes the likelihood of Muji being the Switch successor's codename is unlikely, based on a hash that was discovered in the dev kit.

Michael then posted the hash of a sentence that supposedly contains the codename of the Nintendo Switch 2, mainly as proof to be used in the future. The hash is impossible to read right now, as it requires the original sentence. In the future, once the actual codename of the Nintendo Switch successor is publicly known, the sentence he hashed will be decoded, where fans can then confirm Michael's theory.

Regardless of the codenames that Nintendo has given its hardware, they usually don't stick out all the way to the end. For example, the original Nintendo Switch's codename was "NX" before its official reveal in 2016. Other details about the Nintendo Switch successor console have been hinted at by President Furukawa, such as the integration of the Nintendo Account and hybrid system design. Regardless, fans will need to wait until next year for more information about this upcoming console to be revealed before drawing any concrete conclusions.
