PlayStation 5 Supply Set To Increase Substantially

3.3
Financial analyst David Gibson, who's well known for reporting on games sales data, took to Twitter to report that PlayStation shipment weight imported to the United States has increased 400% year-over-year for the month of September 2022. In other words, the products that Sony Interactive shipped to the US back in September 2021 had a total weight of 1.5 million kgs. This year, however, the weight totalled 7.5 million kgs.

Now, this doesn't mean that PlayStation 5 supply increased exactly fivefold, as these are all shipments from Sony Interactive which probably include controllers and PlayStation 4s. It does show though that there was most likely a significant increase in PlayStation 5 supply in September and suggests that Sony is heavily ramping it up for the holiday season. Looking at the graph below, it's clear that supply has been steadily rising since May of this year.

Though this is only in the United States and doesn't account for other countries, it's probably (and hopefully) an indication that supply is increasing worldwide for the highly demanded console, which will only be more demanded as Christmas approaches. Gibson states that PlayStation isn't alone in these efforts, with Xbox also significantly increasing its supply. According to his report, the company's year-over-year increase in shipment weight for September was 89% or nearly twice the amount.

Both next-gen consoles, those being PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X|S models, have been woefully supply-constrained since their November 2020 launch, particularly the PS5. It was a little over a month ago that a new PlayStation 5 model with a different internal mock-up dropped on the Australian market. Though the model was ostensibly the same in terms of performance, it was slightly lighter, which many assumed was Sony's attempt to make the same product while lowering the need for raw materials, which would therefore ease supply.

Willing buyers can only hope that this increase is a sign of things to come, and the supply issues are beginning to ameliorate themselves. Insider Gaming just recently reported that their sources claim that Sony's goal for the fiscal year 2023 is to ship 30 million PlayStation 5 units. For comparison, Sony's publicly announced goal for the fiscal year 2022 is to ship about 18 million units.
