I currently have a 6 year old Asus ROG laptop, i7, dedicated graphics, blah blah. It's old. Im fairly surprised it can run CS:GO on high settings at 60fps+

Well it's about time to upgrade. I've been looking around for quite some time now at pre-built rigs and at building my own. From what I've found, buying from companies like, iBuyPower and CyberPowerPC, you usually aren't spending much more if not less than actually building it myself. Now I've never built a PC before, I'm fairly knowledgeable as to what will be compatible, but not too familiar at actually knowing how well a certain system will perform.

For instance, I found this PC on bestbuy.com [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

I wrote down all the specs and went to try and piece it together myself but I found myself at a price that was a couple hundred more than the pre-built rig. Then there are companies out there that have a similar PC for over $2000 so I'm very confused there.

So all-in-all, I just need some guidance as to what do to. I'd prefer an Intel build, but open to suggestions, I want as much horsepower as I can achieve with my budget, which is around $1400 at absolute most. I'm leaving for work in about an hour so I will check back in before I leave but any feedback is greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I already have a monitor. Mouse and keyboard can be added later, the budget I stated is for the desktop only.

Some of the bigger questions I have

*Is it better to go with a one more powerful GPU or 2 lesser GPU's in SLI?

*Is it better to go with the most current generation CPU with less cores or an older CPU with more cores?

*Is it recommended to have a company overclock your CPU? What does it do? Can I do it myself?

*Is it recommended to have a company overclock your Graphics Card? What does it do? Can I do it myself?

Typically a more powerful GPU, you could get a 970 or wait for the 1070 to drop

*Is it better to go with the most current generation CPU with less cores or an older CPU with more cores?

Newer generation CPUs are typically better as the broadwell is typically the higher performer than haswell (generation names), four cores is fine in the current generation but remember you want a high number of threads as well. I'd recommend looking at quad core hyper threaded skylake processor.

Overclocking basically will speed up your performance as each thread is running at a higher clock speed and can perform more calculations per clock however you can do this yourself with an unlocked processor. All unlocked Intel processor will be the 'K's e.g. i7 - 4790K

Again with overclocking a GPU you get faster performance which means better FPS in games (sometimes) or a more stable FPS (sometimes) and as with most current generation graphics cards if not all you can do it yourself. E.G. Apps like MSI afterburner help you easily overclock your GPU
