Synopsis:

Freedom Fighters is third-person shooter, in which the player navigates through the streets of New York with a controllable squad of team mates while fighting the occupying Soviet forces. The player gains charisma points by performing various deeds, such as capturing a base or destroying enemy supplies. The more charisma gained, the more squad mates the character can recruit, up to a maximum of twelve. The player can direct recruits by giving them simple orders such as "follow," "attack," and "defend". The game is set in an alternate history where the Soviet Union has invaded and occupied New York City. The player takes the role of Christopher Stone, a plumber turned American Resistance movement leader, fighting against the invaders

Story:

Well my friend the time has come, The Soviet Union has invaded our home New Your City. We must get what little supplies we can and find shelter out of sight of the Soviets. As time goes on we must gather all the able bodies and weapons to come up with a way to strike back at the Soviet Union and push them out of New York. We will rely on gorilla warfare to take down the Soviet Union. We shale build our own headquarters to deploy strategic attacks against our enemy. Any wounded fighters we find we must save them if possible and recruit them for our cause. It is time freedom fighter, to take back our home.

Gameplay:

Freedom Fighters is a very unique game that has things rarely ever seen in any other game. Freedom Fighters is played in a third person view which allows the player to see their character change as they progress through the game. The game itself takes place in New York City and the Soviet Union has taken over the city and has set up a huge head quarters to help them push further into America. You play as Christopher Stone a plumber who has really no clue what is going on at first is the one who leads the rebellion against the Soviet Union. You will come across other characters that will either help you progress to disposing of the invaders or possibly will make things a lot harder for you to accomplish. It will be up to you to take back New York City and restore order.

Freedom Fighters is a really fun game that I personally really enjoyed playing growing up as a child. The game really makes you feel like you are actually there in New York trying to overcome the Soviet Union. As you fight through the dark small streets of New York you will come across injured freedom fighters that will join you if you can heal them and once this is done they will follow you and listen to every command you give them (you can have a max of 12 fighters following you). As you progress through the game you will start having your main base upgraded along with your character which will make him look more like a freedom fighter as you progress. This game is really neat especially when you control the friendly AI around you and can position them as you are in a gun fight with the enemy. This game has a lot in it that you do not see in newer games. The storyline is really awesome and I really like it a lot. I find myself wanting to keep replaying this game over and over again just because I find the game play really fun. There is a multiplayer for this game but sadly I was never given the opportunity to actually try it out. But from what I could tell and a little research it looks like it is a flag based game mode with two teams with one actual player on each team controlling the AI units that are also put on your team. Taking the flag seems to give you more units to help you achieve victory over your opponent. Overall I recommend this game to anyone that is interested in it. Just remember it is from 2003 and is old but is still a awesome to defiantly check out in your spare time. It is a very unique game play style that I personally really enjoy and think you will too.

Graphics:

Keep in mind that Freedom Fighters was released in 2003, with that being said obviously the graphics are not going to be anywhere close to what you would expect a game to look like. The graphics for Freedom Fighters are actually good for the time period the game was made. With there being so much to do and see in this game I think the graphics really fit the game well and look good as you are fighting the Soviet Union. The attention to detail is a bit off and you will notice things that will make you ask yourself what exactly am I looking at, but I think overall the graphics are decent and give the game that retro look and feel to it. The colors all mix well with each other and makes you feel like you are actually there in the fire fight.

Controls:

The controls for Freedom Fighters are really basic and simple to learn. They are your standard controls for mostly any shooter type game and are really easy to memorize. I personally like the controls for the game and think they fit the game really well. I also think the controls help you make yourself feel like you are in the street fighting along side your fellow freedom fighters. I have not found a single problem with any of the controls and found them really easy to figure out when first playing Freedom Fighters. Overall this game can make you sit on the edge of your seat or be a relaxing game to play because of the controls. It all depends on how the player plays the game.

Overall:

Game play: 9.5/10
Graphics: 8.5/10
Controls: 9/10
Overall: 9/10

Extras:

This game is a really neat game to play. Sense it is so old I would assume it is extremely cheap to purchase if not free. I highly recommend this game to anyone and if you want to see game play go to YouTube and check some out. It has a really cool storyline that gets you sucked right into it all.
