Synopsis
As the story goes, Sly Cooper is a young master thief, assisted by his turtle buddy, Bentley, and a hippo named Murray. The threesome set out on a mission of vengeance, striking back against the five criminals who killed Sly's father and stole the Thievius Raccoonus, a sort of Stealing for Dummies compiled by the great thieves that make up the Cooper line. Along the way, you'll recover pages from the long-lost book, defeat the Fiendish Five, and run into Carmelita Fox, a cop who's always hot on Sly's tail.

The Fiendish Five have split up and gone their separate ways since stealing Sly's book, so you'll traverse through five separate worlds. With the exception of the final world, each world is broken up into a set of levels. You'll start out each one with a brief introductory level that leads you to a hub level for that world. Each world has seven main objectives that manifest themselves in the form of treasure keys. You'll earn the first key in the intro level. From there, a couple of levels will be available in the hub, but you'll have to earn a couple more keys to open up the rest of the hub. Once you've collected all seven keys, you can fight the world's boss.

Gameplay
The gameplay in this game is actually pretty fun and this was actually the first Sly Copper game that I played. It's a third person stealth, platformer. You play as Sly Cooper, a thieving raccoon. This game tries to mix the action of a "one hit kill arcade game" and the stealth of a Splinter Cell game, and might I say that they accomplish it quite nicely! Throughout the many enemies, bosses, sneaking, looting, and anything else I forgot to mention, Sly uses a cane that has been passed down from thief to thief within his family so the game encourages the use of stealth and what not to achieve sneaky one hit kill attacks while rushing from shadow to shadow.

Plot
Sly, aided with his turtle friend, Bentley, and his hippo friend, Murray they are back in the game and this time around they are trying to break into police headquarters in Paris, where they are trying to retrieve a police owned file that actually belongs to Slt. This is also where they run into Carmelita Montoya, a fox police officer. They try and tell Carmelita the story of how the book was stolen from him and his family as a child, all while Carmelita is shooting at the threesome. The trio actually met each other after the book was stolen from Sly's father, who happened to be killed by a crime group called the "Fiendish Five." The crime group not only killed Sly's father, putting him and his friends in an orphanage, but they also took the book which can teach anyone how to become a master thief. The crime group all took equal portions of the book, and spread it around the world. Now that the group is somewhat grown, they are on a misson to find the stolen book and avenge Sly's father's death.

Story
The story-line of this game is actually quite stimulating and fun. They set the game to make you feel that Sly knew JUST enough to get him to where he is now within the game. He is a stealthy raccoon that is good at sneaking and hand to cane combat if you will. He is also aided by the extreme genius, Bentley who generally sits back and helps Sly through an earpiece while he is out of harms way in their van. Also, occasionally, Murray, the extra muscle, helps Sly when the situation gets tough and Sly needs some big brawn and big muscle to get him out of harms way. The group works extremely well together and throughout the game it seems like they all want to avenge Sly's father's death, and not JUST Sly. There share a bond that only three childhood friends could share between one another, and through the story of this game, you really get a huge glimpse of that.

Graphics
The graphics of this game are pretty lacking to be honest. But, that being said, the game was released in 2002, on the PS2 anyways, which is the console that I played this game on. The shadows within the game sometimes didn't look real, and lighting was off occasionally, as well as the character design being pretty general only changing slight things from enemy to enemy. However, for this period of time in the gaming world, this game had somewhat outstanding graphics, for it's time of release anyways.

Controls
The controls of this game are like most sneaking games, even to today's date. Very simple sneaking/combat controls within this game. So, that being said, this game has a very low learning curve on control schemes and button layouts and what not, extremely easy to play with. If you have ever played any other kind of third person sneaking/combat game before, you should have no problem picking this game up and playing it, no problem.

Ratings
Gameplay - 9/10

Story - 9.5/10
Controls - 9/10
Graphics - 6.5/10
Overall - 7.5/10

Personal Note:This game spoke to me as a child. The story-line of Sly losing his father spoke to me and really taught me how truly important family was, and how people would do absolutely ANYTHING for their loved ones, even after death. Also, it taught me how important it was to make some true friends, and if you did, they would have your back through ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. This game is a must play/buy if you ever have the chance to pick it up and try it out. You won't be disappointed in the least.
