For some reason, my standard Mic won't work and it doesn't even acknowledge that I have a Mic in when play ing games. Do I need the update?

Sometimes it feels plugged in all the way when it really isn't trying pushing a bit harder or unplug and plug in. If you hit the mute button does the yellow light appear?
