Synopsis

Set in Chicago, where a central network of computers connects everyone and everything, Watch_Dogs explores the impact of technology within our society. Using the city as your weapon, you will embark on a personal mission to inflict your own brand of justice.

Chicago's overarching network is known as the Central Operating System (ctOS), and it controls almost all of the city's technology and information - including key data on all of the city's residents.

You play as Aiden Pearce, a brilliant hacker and former thug, whose criminal past led to a violent family tragedy. While seeking justice for those events, you'll monitor and hack those around you by manipulating the ctOS from the palm of your hand. You'll access omnipresent security cameras, download personal information to locate a target, control traffic lights and public transportation to stop the enemy... and more.

Storyline

The storyline of Watch Dogs is built around the concept of information warfare, data being interconnected, and the world's increasing use of technologyquestioning who exactly runs the computers they depend on. The game is set in an alternate reality version of Chicago, Illinois, which is one of many cities to feature a supercomputer known as a "CtOS" (Central Operating System). The system controls almost every piece of technology in the city, and contains information on all of the city's residents and activities which can be used for various purposes. In the game's universe, the Northeast blackout of 2003 was found to be caused by a hacker, prompting the development of CtOS.

The game will follow an anti-hero named Aiden Pearce, a highly skilled hacker described as a person who uses both "fists and wits." The gameplay demo shown at E3 depicted Aiden's attempt to assassinate a media mogul named Joseph DeMarco, who had been wrongly acquitted on charges of murder.

He can connect to different electronic devices connected to central operating system of the city (ctOS) using his special smartphone. This ability is the central part of the game. Aiden Pearce uses his smartphone for hacking electronic devices to solve different problems during the game.

As I wrote above before, the main story of Watch Dogs takes place in alternative reality version of Chicago. All electronic equipment and devices is controlled by CtOS, which means those who control the information can rule the world. Aiden Pierce is a hacker and anti-hero. He has his own goals and he uses weaknesses of CtOS to solve his problems and sometimes help people.

He will be solving problems by hacking into hidden top secret information, stoping crimes taking advantage of the city defence systems, tracking down criminals using the latest tracking technology. he will also do crime himself, which leads the cops to get on his tail for him using and hacking CtOS as his weapon.

For example you can steal someones bank data and take the money, you can distract other people by triggering defects of the equipment, you can switch off unwanted cameras and so on. It is a very interesting way to interact with the world. There is no other game that allows to use such tricks. Aiden Pearces smartphone allows to access data about different people. It can show the target of your mission and helps to evade the police.

In Depth : Aiden Pearce

You are Aiden Pearce, a man shaped by violence and obsessed with surveillance, who monitors his family 24/7 in secret to protect them from something that happened in the past. Unfortunately, his family will get endangered once again.

Pushed to his limits, he will take justice into his own hands and confront a corrupt system using every weapon available to him. Aiden will become a modern Vigilante Hero not a hero from the 70's with a cape, but a real human being that will deal with all the repercussions of his actions.

'Aiden Pearce is the primary protagonist of Watch Dogs, and is a highly skilled Grey-Hat hacker who has access to the CtOS of Chicago using his highly specialized device, the Profiler. Because of the danger put to those in his past whom he loved, he has taken to a personal crusade against the powers that be. His obsession with security, surveillance, and control borders on the paranoid and dangerous, extending to monitoring his own family (unbeknownst to them).

Biography :
Aiden Pearce was born in Belfast, Northern Island, during the Troubles. In this dangerous and violent time period, he grew accustomed to violence, becoming a skilled fighter. After leaving and becoming a Naturalized Citizen of the United States of America, he was arrested on charges of Computer Fraud, Illegal Possession of a Firearm, and Grand Larceny. He served 11 months in a Cook County Correctional Facility before escaping the charges. He has a bench warrant out for his immediate arrest, and is a well-known vigilante. Because his criminal past has led to violent family tragedy and ongoing pressure from federal sources, Aiden has taken control of Chicago in a campaign of revenge and retribution, aiming to take down those responsibly for his family's suffering.

Due to his obsession with secrets and surveillance, he gives a vigil over his family unbeknownst to them, and takes justice in his own hands, confronting the corrupt city that has gripped his City and using it to down down anyone who gets in his way.

Abilities :
Aiden is incredibly skilled in hacking electrical systems, to the level at which he could be considered an "expert". He matches this intellectual prowess with excellent physical training in lethal and non-lethal hand-to-hand combat, offensive/defensive driving, lethal and non-lethal firearms marksmanship, systems hacking, and parkour.

In Depth : Characters

Jordi Chin :

When youre screwed beyond belief, you call in a fixer. And thats Jordi. He gets things done and gets paid good money for his services. You need a body to disappear? You gotta find a missing adversary? Someone pissed you off? You call Jordi.

Jordi is the leader of a gang called the Fixers.
While he seems to be close to Aiden and they have each other's trust, the two seem to have a love-hate relationship; as Aiden notes, "We don't hang out, because we'd kill each other." Jordi, on the other hand, says Aiden has no art, no nuance, no subtlety, "Much like this shit-show" (referring to DeMarco's art gallery).

He also may be a gun dealer because he is seen passing off a gun to Aiden Pearce that he uses to kill Joseph Demarco. He apparently dislikes DeMarco, viewing DeMarco's dot.conneXion digital art gallery as a "shit-show". When Pearce finally lets him in on his plans to eliminate DeMarco, Jordi seems genuinely pleased and gives him the pistol for free, telling Aiden to "consider it a donation".

Jordi seems to be a gun 'connoisseur' as he describes in great detail a Beretta M9 he has prepared for Aiden, spending "all afternoon getting her ready for you. She's oiled, she's loose, she's perfect... just the way you like it."
Jordi appears to be of Asian descent.

T-Bone Grady :

T-Bone grew up a tinkerer and a basement hacker before the Internet was barely a byte. He cant help challenging his mind to unlock areas forbidden to him. And it hasnt gone without punishment. But hell take his jabs. And hell give his share in return.

Grady appears to have a knack for computers and is sad when he had to leave a motherboard behind to escape a group of Fixers. He also carries a handgun with him in his back pocket. He is also said to have had a part in the northeast attacks that left eleven dead.

Clara Lille :

Clara is seductive. Shes dangerous. Shes the trapdoor spider you never saw living right under you. She can weave her way through any system and she can expose every secret you hide.

Clara has a dark past, much like Aiden, and she possesses her own methods of hacking. The skull on her shirt indicates she may be part of Dedsec.

It's suspected that she helped Aiden to become the hacker he is by giving him his iconic phone.

Joseph Demarco :

Joseph Demarco was a Chicago philanthropist and sponsor of the Dot ConneXion art collective. During the mission Demarco Assassination, Aiden Pearce used a firearm provided to him by Jordi Chin to kill him. Joseph Demarc's records imply that he was charged for various crimes including perjury, solicitation or murder, and other assorted crimes, but as for unknown raasons acquitted of these charges prior to the events of Watch Dogs.

In Depth : ctOS

The ctOS is an efficient system linking all the city's infrastructure and public security installations to one centralized hub. This system focuses on traffic efficiency, eco-development, tele-communications, and crime control throughout Chicago. It has brought notable benefits to citizens, including shorter commutes, lowered crime rates, a cleaner city, and much more.

ctOS, also know as the Central Operating System, Is the very heart of the game world's all electric equipment.
Aiden Pearce will have the ability to take advantage of the ctOS, it also allows you to explore the many layers of Chicago itself. Cutting through buildings, scaling rooftops, and exploring the city's dangerous underground to catch your target.

Watch Dogs takes place in a fully simulated living city. Using Aiden's smartphone, you have real-time control over the city's infrastructure. Trap your enemy in a 30-car pileup, created by manipulating the traffic lights. Stop a train, and then board it to evade the authorities. Narrowly escape capture by quickly raising a drawbridge. Anything connected to the ctOS can become your weapon.

In Depth : World

Watch_Dogs takes place in a contemporary Chicago that's been enhanced and transformed by the ctOS. In this version of Chicago, everything is connected. Banks, security systems, communication hubs, and even the city's basic infrastructure operate via the this connected network. The ctOS provides a new take on one of the world's great cities, and it's this omniscient setting that serves as the backdrop for Aiden's story.

Game is set in Chicago in the near future, being imagined and developed by Ubisoft.
The game will be made up of a main storyline coupled along with side missions and at any point in the game, the player can scan passing pedestrians with the Profiler, uncovering personal information about them and learning if they are the target of a crime or the perpetrator, at this point Aiden can choose to intervene which would consequently lead to a series of showdowns. Aiden can also loot abandoned cars or enemies for items which can be taken to pawn shops and sold in order to buy weapons and ammo.

The player would also control the course of action they want to take throughout the game, going for a more aggressive playstyle will have some response with the media, affecting Aiden's reputation, and will lead to heated arguments with the Chicago Police Department. While choosing a more stealthy approach will have Aiden performing non-lethal takedowns, taking all attention away from him until caught.

Chicago is a major transportation hub in America.
The Chicago Transit Authority or CTA, runs all buses and subway/L-train Lines.

The Rapid Cab Company seems to be, by the events of Watch Dogs, the only cab company in the city.

The city also features two major airports, including O'Hare International Airport (ORD), the world's second busiest airport, and Midway International Airport (MDW). Although being major Chicago landmarks and facilities, it is unknown if those airports will be featured in Watch Dogs.

The real city is 234.0 sq mi (606.1 km), but the size of the in-game map is currently unknown. However, it was stated by Ubisoft than the city will be large enough to support vehicles that can go up to 180 mph.

The Loop is a district in downtown Chicago and a location in Watch Dogs. All of the events seen in the E3 Gameplay Video takes places in this area. Its real size is of 1.58 sq mi (4.09 sq km).

The neighborhood is named after the early cable cars and later the L Train that makes a loop in this area.

The Chicago River is a system of canals that runs through downtown Chicago. The events of the game take place south of West Wacker Drive, the street bordering the river.
Many lift bridges cross the river. Aiden Pearce has the ability to lift and lower those bridges using his Profiler.

This could be used to Pearce's advantage by stopping police cars chasing him or cutting off a target's potential escape across the bridge.

In the 2012 E3 Gameplay Video, the minimap in the bottom corner of the screen at one point shows what appears to be a boat. At the conclusion of the 2013 E3 Gameplay Video, the protagonist Aiden Pearce can be seen escaping police in a speed boat through the Chicago River.

Gameplay : Weapons

Living in inner city Chicago, where violence is often answered by violence, Aiden has learned how to take the fight to the streets. Deliver devastating blows with your baton, or experience electrifying shoot-outs with physics simulation that rivals anything in the shooter category. Throughout his journey, Aiden will take on his foes with more than 30 traditional weapons.

Confirmed weapons in this game :
AK-47
Baton
Barrett M468
Barrett M107
Beretta M9
Beretta Px4 Storm
Bio-metric Assault Rifle
Vector .45 SMG
92FS

The Baton is Pearce's melee weapon of choice in Watch Dogs. It is shown as a compact, retractable baton, rather than a fixed length baton.
Pearce uses the baton to disarm and injure individuals. It can also be used in stealth takedowns to silently knock out the target unconscious. Currently, it is the only non-lethal weapon in the game.

It is unknown if police will use this, chasing the player,Aiden Pearce.

This weapon is also known as an Asp. The Asp is a telescopic weapon used in America by most police. It is a non-lethal weapon, but could still potentially do some major damage. As seen in some of the game footage this can be used for multiple things. His type of Asp baton seems to be the 21 inch friction lock version. The friction lock mean you have to flick the baton out from the handle. The Asp is something that citizens in the US can carry and purchase for self defence.

Vector and M107 can be seen as purchasable in a weapon store during one of the gameplay demonstrations.

Bio-metric Assault Rifle : A biometrics weapon smuggled into Chicago for a captain of the Black Viceroys gang. The weapon only works with the first person who holds the gun. Obtained in MIssion from purchasing the Signature Shot Edition. - You will also get a Black Viceroys gang colors outfit from the signature shot edition

The 92FS - a pistol (which is the civilian variant of the M9 pistol) in the game. The pistol was shown in the open world gameplay premiere demo, but was not used.
- It most likely has a magazine size of 15, seeing as that is the standard capacity of the real-world 92FS.

The Beretta Px4 Storm - a handgun. It was shown in the newly released gameplay footage where Aiden Pearce carried it and used it to infiltrate the CtOS building. As evidenced by the ammo counter on the HUD, it has a 14 round magazine, and appears to have excellent. accuracy.

Gameplay : Driving
[spoil]
Driving will be a big part of Watch Dogs, since that game was based off a driving game engine. dictating how players approach any given situation, for instance players might opt to "stealth drive", trying to escape a locked down area all while trying to avoid contact with police, one such feature is the ability to park and turn off the car in order to make it more difficult for patrol cars and search lights to find you.

Luckily, Aiden won't always need to traverse Chicago's streets on foot. Ubisoft Montreal has partnered with studios such as Ubisoft Reflections, the acclaimed team behind the award-winning Driver series, to provide a suite of vehicles bursting with horsepower. You'll get behind the wheel of more than 65 cars each with state-of-the-art physics and handling to explore Chicago's vast and intricate roadways.

Confirmed cars in this game :
McLaren MP4-12C
Lotus Evora
Lotus Elise
Ford Fiest
Ford Edge
Nissan Armada
Range Rover Evoque
Standard Sedan

You can also get on Taxis.
Cabs around Chicago are run by the Rapid Cab company. The car model is Cavale, as seen on the back of the vehicle. The design of the vehicle is clearly American and bears a lot of resemblance to the sixth generation Chervrolet Capricewith eighth generation 2013 Chevrolet Malibu taillights. The taxi is a modified version of the unknown standard sedan. It is unknown if Pearce can use the taxis throughout the game.

Gameplay : Multiplayer

The game features an online multiplayer element. The "multiplayer" experience is a one-on-one interaction between two human characters in which one player seamlessly and secretly joins the single player experience of another player.[12] The first player (which entered the other player's world) is tasked with finding the second player (which is initially unaware that another human is in their game session - no notification is given to the second player). Once the first player finds the second player the objective is updated. The first player's new objective involves installing a back door virus into the second player's smartphone, then hiding while that virus siphons off a portion of the data the second player has collected. This stolen information increases the first player's power once they return to their own single player session. The second player must stay within a certain radius of the first player for the download to progress. Once the download is initiated, the second player is alerted that they have been hacked and that data is being stolen from their smartphone. Once the second player has been alerted of the intrusion their objective is to locate the first player who is stealing their data, and either kill the first player or cause them to flee to such a distance that the download is halted (a certain minimum distance must be maintained for the download to progress).

There is a also a multiplayer mode besides the single player mod. It is a pvp hacking game. One player has to secretly join another player and the objective is to hack the other player. With such an open world, you need to think smart against this other player and use the tools at your disposal.

Watch Dogs multiplayer is an elaborate game of cat-and-mouse. Even when you find the hacker, they have a chance to run away, changing the chase into a physical one. Luckily for us single-player gamers, the multiplayer aspect is off during missions and can be turned off altogether. Ubisoft has yet to go into the risk and reward of attempting to hack other players, but if it's tuned right, it could be a rewarding little mode to try out from time-to-time... with people you trust.

Multiplayer version number two was shown to me at PAX Prime 2013 in Seattle. This version requires an Android or iOS tablet to work. Yes, it's the dreaded second-screen experience! The player on the tablet controls the city's infrastructure and the police force. You can send a challenge to the console player. If they agree, the game throws a few checkpoints around the city that they have to clear within a certain time limit.

In case youre wondering how silly it would be to have 30 Aiden Pearces running around, thats not how it works. Instead, each player appears as Aiden Pearce only to themselves everyone else just sees them as a generic NPC. What this means, really, is that when youre looking for someone to hack (or trying to work out whos trying to hack you) your targets will just look like NPCs. In short: to each player, only they are Aiden Pearce.

it's a chase as the tablet player throws up roadblocks, changes traffic lights, closes bridges and hacks other objects to prevent the console player's progress. The only direct NPC object the tablet player controls is a police helicopter, with acts as a beacon for other police forces around the city and shows the tablet player what objects can be controlled in the area. Do you activate a roadblock to stop the console player, or do you have something better waiting for them near a check point? What if they decide to hack to the roadblock to stop police pursuers? It seemed really cool both times I saw the demo, which was played live for audience benefit.

This apparently isnt all there is to it you can apparently wander into someones game and watch them, or grief them, or help them out, and there will apparently be multiplayer missions that task you with protecting others. Its also worth noting that this stuff will be disabled while youre doing a main or side mission, and you can just opt out of the multiplayer anyway if you really want to. Still: a neat touch.

Map

Watch Dogs creative director Jonathan Morin has compared the game's fictional version of Chicago to Rockstar's chart-storming epic Grand Theft Auto 5.

Morin wouldn't speak to the exact size of Watch Dogs' Chicago map, but promised that its environment would offer a "huge density".

"One thing I wanted to promote with Watch Dogs was density, a lot more than scale," Morin told Eurogamer during an interview conducted today at EGX 2013. "We have a big city but one thing a lot of games aren't exploring is the shared density of it.

"[In Watch Dogs] you can stand still and profile people for ten minutes - you're playing without moving, almost. I think that's even more important to me than just adding size to it. I don't want size just becoming a space between A and B. We have a huge world but it's more about the density."

Having such an enormous world made sense for a game like Grand Theft Auto 5, Morin continued, because of its inclusion of aeroplanes - something Watch Dogs won't offer.

"GTA 5 has a huge world but it has flying, it has jets so it serves that purpose. You don't have a jet unless you have the space to fly into. Us, we have huge density, so if we double or triple the scale then you're going to start hitting repetition because we wanted to aim for the density first. We wanted the game to be the right size for that density, so it's a matter of balancing what you want to achieve."

No map screen shots are confirmed yet on Watch Dogs, but looking on google maps, the location should match about the same as the screenshot below.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Also from the bonus map poster, one part of the map was confirmed.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

At first glance when I saw that map, it looked pretty darn accurate to the real Chicago. Although it still does, one thing that still stands out to me (and you can see in the 3D view of the city posted above) is the addition to another branch of the Chicago River.

As you can see there is a larger branch that goes off the map towards the West (left) end of the map; this doesn't exist in Chicago (the South branch of the Chicago River eventually turns Southwest like the game's map South of The Loop).

As for that little island, my best guess would be that it is equivalent to Goose Island (for those familiar, where the brewery is) though it is located farther North on the Chicago River.

They are not aiming for a complete replica of Chicago, but the details are almost accurate, there a lot of major changes but most of the buildings and city routes and corners were confirmed.

DLCs

Ubisoft has revealed that the PlayStation-exclusive DLC for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Watch Dogs may be available on other platforms after six months.

The information comes courtesy of OCTOBER 23, 2013's new PlayStation 4 trailer. At around the 1.15 mark, small print first spotted by Shack News explains that the content will only be exclusive to Sony platforms for six months.

Watch Dogs will come with four bonus missions that unlock an extra outfit for protagonist Aiden Pearce.

The implication of this is that the DLC will be available on Xbox One and other platforms once the timed deal expires;
we've reached out to Ubisoft for clarification exactly what platforms should expect to see it, as well as what the lack of small print on the European trailer means.

Ubisoft wrote lot of stories for us to tell in the Watch Dogs universe, One thing were also exploring is how we could, in the next month after shipping the game, create more gameplay within it. Because its a rich city and we have a lot of ideas for fun things we could be doing in it that we dont necessarily have in our scope right now, so well be exploring different kinds of gameplay that we could also push within that game world following the release.

Gaming Platforms

In an interview with a Dutch game website on February 2013, Ubisofts boss Yves Guillemot says development for the 360 and PS3 hasn't even started yet.

The team was developing it for high end pcs and next gen, after that other teams are looking how they can make it fit for the older generation. So the first approach is to see how they can take full advantage of the next gen consoles.

"Two titles which will define what next generation gaming will look in its mature phase will be Watch Dogs and Destiny.
"These are two games we have aligned with closely and will have substantial exclusive PlayStation 4 content," Gara said.

Sony revealed how much exclusivity they will have with these two titles back at E3 last summer. They no doubt will have other exclusive content coming from additional games, but Destiny and Watch Dogs are two impressive titles to align with.
Consumers have flocked to both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 thus far, but 2014 should be a major year for the two systems to identify themselves more through the games they bring to each system.
Third party titles are going to be a major part of that and we tend to agree with Fergal that these two games will define what next-gen gaming can be.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

The new intellectual property was originally set to hit store shelves last year. Although a lot of fans were looking to play the game on the PS4 and Xbox One next-generation system, lot of the fans are interested in getting the game on current-generation consoles, which led Ubisoft to Daley the release date, because they haven't worked on the current-gen version.

On the poll in the Watch Dogs wiki, I could see that more people are interested to get watch dogs on pc, following with PS4, and PS3.
Somehow Watch Dogs has more fans on Playstation than Xbox, I guess because the development was based off the Playstation engine, just like how Ubisoft develops every game.

With the advent of next-gen, Ubisoft will "have to consider the open world much more like a platform that we could sustain for years," said Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag designer Jean-Sebastien Decant. Speaking with GameReactor, Decant said, "I think we're going toward a gaming place where the open world will be shared with other players. More and more. Socially speaking, but also maybe multiplayer stuff."

To that end, the recently delayed Watch Dogs may have a profound effect on the Assassin's Creed franchise. "Watch Dogs is kind of showing us the path for the future," Decant said. "We have to respect our brands. So if we have to go that way with Assassin's Creed we have to think about how it could fit into Assassin's Creed."

In Watch Dogs, players may find themselves interacting with other players during their single-player game -- perhaps we'll see something similar implemented into Assassin's Creed 5 as Ubisoft moves away from the current generation of platforms and fully toward the next generation.

Watch Dogs WeAreData

To accompany the launch of the Watch Dogs video game, WatchDogs: WeAreData is a demonstration of some of the smart cities concept that forms a major part of the games narrative.

The site offers detailed data on London, Paris and Berlin based around an explorable 3D city map which continually feeds information from open sources such as social media accounts like Twitter or Instagram as well as the overall infrastructure of subway activity, traffic light and public toilet locations.

The result is an interactive real-time map of European cities, almost a digital terrain layer of some of the invisible activities to provide a whole new sense of the life of a city.
The design and interactivity is very slick with a really useful tutorial feature to talk you through the key elements of the sites functions and information.

Ubisoft, the publisher of the upcoming Watch Dogs, introduced a new website named WeareData. The website shows all of the public data available in the cities of Paris, Berlin, and London in an interactive map. The data used for the website includes social media posts (Foursquare, Twitter, etc.), traffic lights, mobile phone networks, and running subway trains.

The purpose of the website was to point out how much public data there already is, and how interconnected it is. The effect is fascinating and relatively creepy, which keeps with Ubisofts marketing strategy for Watch Dogs.
The conceit for Watch Dogs is that the player is a hacker in a Grand Theft Auto-style open city, with the added ability to hack city systems, cameras, and the smartphones of pedestrians.

There is a video by Ubisoft showing just how the data seen on WeareData was obtained.
It turns out access to the data is surprisingly simple, though development of the visualization map itself was a bit more difficult.

Try adding some more info on other things. It seems like you are focusing more on gameplay more than everything you should know

Thanks for advice. I've added more in-depth information on the need-to-know characters, and also about the ctOS.
