Story

If you were to jump right into the game EA Sport's MMA, you would head for the story mode. The hype for this mode before release was unreal. It advertised many different modes and options you could choose from within the campaign of this UFC/Strikeforce based game. From different camps to join, to leveling up your created fighter to take on the big dogs of the MMA world, this game has it all. You start off the story mode with a created character. Now let me say, this is one of the most creative and wild variety of options to choose from I have ever seen in a game that allows you to create your own character. From skin tone, to tattoos, to stylizing your fighter with an incredible, rainbow mo hawk. There is a crazy amount of options in each of these individual tasks you can use to create your own, personal character. 100's of options await you in this wonderful Create a Fighter mode. After you go through that process, you start in your training camps, leveling up your fighter. There are tons of attributes to fit your character such as: Right Handed Power, Left Handed Power, Ground Game Offense, Ground Game Defense, Clinch game, etc. There are really great amount of options to keep you coming back to career mode trying to max out your character. Afterwards, you begin training. You can train for as long as you want until the next event on your list comes up. You keep playing this events, with bumps down the big league road to success. You start off in the rookie league, and after a while you will rank up as far to try to shoot for the Strikeforce Championship. Do you have what it takes?

Exhibition Mode

Have you ever wanted to just have a 1 on 1 battle with one of the CPU, or to test out your skill against one of your buddies offline? EA Sports MMA has this and more to bring to the table. There are 5 different weight divisions you may choose from. Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight, Middleweight, Welterweight, and Lightweight. In each of these weight divisions, there are a variety of professional fighters you may choose from. From Randy Couture, to Fedor Emelianenko, MMA offers a lot. There are roughly 15-20 or so fighters in each division. Keep in mind this is mainly a Strikeforce based game, so there are more fighters from there then UFC. After you have chosen the fighters, you even have the choice to choose your arena and rules of the match. The rules differ from traditional Strikeforce rules, which means no knees or kicks to the head of a downed opponent, to Japanese styled rules to where they are both allowed, plus more such as elbows. Then we move on to the gameplay/controls of the game.

Controls

The controls in this game are what you would expect from a traditional style fighting/mixed martial arts game. X, or Square, is to punch with one hand, Y, or Triangle, is to punch with the other. There are also kicks that differ as well. With these combinations, you can keep the heat coming with a skilled variety of combo attacks coming from powerful straight jabs leading up to a headkick, to wide expansion of them for each character. That's right, not every character has the same attacks. One fighter, Cung Li for example, has a special flying kick that I believe, no other character shares. Features like this make the game compelling and different each time you step inside the octagon. There are actually 2 types of controls in EA MMA. One is called the Classic Control, and the other named Total Strike Control. The difference between these is pretty steep. The classic control is similar to every other MMA/fighting game, where the face buttons would be attacks, and the rest would be octagon control. The Total Strike Control, however, is completely different. All of the striking is actually done with the right analog sticks, instead of the face buttons. You may think this is awkward, but actually if you play on this setting enough, you will find that your strikes will be more accurate due to you have complete control over them other than just a click of a button. This is a throwback to the classic EA Fight Night games, so if you are a fan of those series of games, or just simply want to try something different and new, check this control setting out.

Online Mode

Like every other EA game, MMA comes with an online code you must enter before playing the game online. If you can get past this small feat, you can delve into the heavily expanded world of MMA online. There are many different modes you may choose from in this game. From the traditional 1 on 1, to a special "live" event type of mode that allows you to watch the top contenders for a championship online duke it out with live commentary from real EA Sports commentators. While these programs are indeed live, if you happen to miss one you may re-watch it again even with the commentary from the Multiplayer screen. You can even fight for the championship in each weight division online. The more you play in 1 division, the more you "rank" up in it in your efforts to become the number one contender to face the current reigning champion. If you do manage to take that privileged spot, you may defend your title online against other contenders that have went through what you have to get where you are now. Compelling and different really describe the online mode of this game. Any more, you don't really see this much in depth effort that was clearly put into this game.

The Final Verdict

EA Sports MMA is an action packed game for every fan of MMA, or any sports game in general. I wasn't much of a fighting game fan (MMA) until I picked this game up. It completely changed how I look at this sport, and other games that follow the path, but don't quite reach the peak that is this game. Although it may fall flat under the current UFC games that are coming out, this game is sure to please. The only real con I have about this game, other than the occasional matchmaking/online lag (Which is expected from EA servers), is the somewhat steep learning curve to this game. While this isn't the most difficult game to learn in existence, it sure takes some dedication and time to do consistently well in EA MMA. This isn't one of those games where you can just pick up and do amazing, because of the different character combos and what not, but it definitely isn't the hardest I've seen in a while either. If your a fan of any MMA game, or any fighting game in general, this game is a must buy. For the casual gamer though, its deep learning curve may stir you away, but I would give it a shot, because you never know who's going to be holding the next Strikeforce Championship.

The Final Rating

8.5/10
