EA Sports next edition to its football franchise FIFA is here and there are some major changes to both the gameplay and controls with some controversial new features including a whole new Tactical Defence system. It's definitely a big move that is trying its best to make a more realistic football experience, but I'm not sure if it is a big improvement.

Its now all about the timing and positioning when trying to get the perfect defence. You no longer hold down one button to attack the ball, instead of this there is a button that 'shepherds' the player with the ball. Tackling options include the obvious slide tackle and a standing tackle option that is used when you are right next to the player with the ball. Controlling this system can become a bit clunky and you may feel that your player isn't as responsive as you would like when trying to tackle but apart from this, the defence system will grow on you. Even the passing can feel a bit unresponsive but this is usually only when the pass assist directs the ball to a teammate you were not intentionally aiming for. But pass assist can be turned down or off completely, and if tactical defending does not appeal to you, you can always switch back to the old system in the options.

The next major difference in this game compared to the others is the new Player Impact Engine which tries to make player collisions more realistic. This works well most of the time, but not always. You may find yourself tripping ridiculously over other players even if you have barely impacted with them or in my experience back flipping when tackled. Using this impact engine the developers have tried to make a more realistic football experience and it does have its good moments, but sometimes you wonder if the change was for the better. At least you can have a few occasional laughs with your friends when you see something abnormal.
A new experience system is also a fresh feature this year. You will now gain EXP points for doing basically anything in the game and receive personal level ups to compare against your friends. The points will also go towards a global tally for your favourite club. It is always rewarding to know you are contributing to a club you actually support in the real world, even if it is only on a video game.
In the end I think FIFA 12 is definitely an improvement in the franchise, I liked some of the smaller details added such as actual player photos and some improved commentary which obviously makes a huge difference in a sport game. I would highly recommend FIFA 12 even if you aren't a fan of football, it is no doubt one of the best sport games out there at the moment.

9/10- Eden
