I'm an amateur in the world of photography, and I'm coming upon an issue I can't seem to solve.

I'm trying to take portraits and such where the object is in focus, and the background is very blurred.
In the preview it looks good, however when I actually take the photo and look back on it, the background is not as blurred as it was in the preview.

I've tried messing with the settings and changing lenses and stuff but it doesn't seem to work.

For example, the preview looks like this:

And it comes out like this:

I'm using a Canon Rebel T5.

I don't think you can ever take a picture blurred like this.

I know you have to set your aperture wide so it has a narrow depth of focus creating the blurred bg but not blurred like you show in the preview.
Maybe try to take the shot being closer to the subject but with the subject further away from the bg...
Hope this helps!

I'm trying to achieve this kind of look, which I know can be done. I'm just not sure exactly how.

I can get it pretty good in the preview, like i said, but when I go to the actual photo it took, it's not how it was in the preview.

To get pictures that blurry you need a longer lens.
and a wider aperture.

False. The length of your lens means nothing for this effect (no one say it).

Anywho to achieve that SOOC shot it's a combination of technique and lenses.
First off watch the video below, it pretty clearly explains the concept, and second of all think about investing in a cheaper macro lens.
