What is the big appeal about having people with og names on your friends list, ive never understood it?

Before 2011 and on 360 I would understand, but now it is so common that it is irrelevant at this stage.
Not really common due to the fact that a lot of people don't really have OGs just random 3 Letters. At least that's what I've been seeing
