I have the new dashboard and don't know how to update my console to allow me to do the backwards compatibility thing..

Backwards compatibility isn't available right away

The game first and foremost must be backwards compatible. Next you'll have to do one of these two things. If your game is a disc, insert the disc, it'll probably ask you to update the game, so update. If is a digital game, then go to My games and apps, scroll all the over to ready to install and select the game and wait for it to install.
