What exactly is this?What do you get to do when you get invited?

Xbox preview is a program which members get updates early and as of recent backwards compatibly

You can test things before general release to public. You can test new dashboards, features, and betas. Give feedback in forums or even suggest things to bring to Xbox LIVE.
