This would be better suited in PC General section I think. I'll answer anyway. The 390x is rumoured to be a $750-$850 card. Even if we could tell you how it's going to perform, whether it beats SLI 970s is kind of irrelevant. If it doesn't, it will obviously have no place in the market. If it does, then ok? SLI 970s are about $600-$650 or so, that's $100-$250 cheaper than the 390x is rumoured to be, so you can't really compare them.

Basically, we can't really know until AMD tell us more about it in 2/3 weeks time, or until it's released in about 4 weeks time. Until then, it's all speculation really.

The 390x will probably be competing with the teased 980ti and the Titan series, as a very high end card. With a price range of anywhere from $700-$900 (Rumors, nothing official) it should be competing with them. There are much cheaper options (Sancty's mentioned 970 SLI and a single 980) for 1440p gaming, so this will probably be a card aimed at the 4k crowd.

Considering SLI 970s are already a better performer than the 980 and AMD doesn't have a card to really beat out Nvidia at the mid $300 range (The 290x is cheaper at ~$300, but can't outperform a 970), I really just want AMD to announce a card that will be even more competitive with the 970 for 1080p gaming.

380 and 380x are going to be 290 and 290x re-brands, so we can't really expect them to be anymore than $250-$200 since $250 right now can get you a 290, and $300 can get you a 290x. If the 390x is between $750-$850(from what I've heard), I can't even imagine where that's going to put the 390 in all honesty. I was honestly expecting the 380 and 380x to be around $200-$275, the 390 to be a $400 or so card and the 390x to be around $500-$550, with maybe a higher end card for closer to the $800 mark. It would have been nice because potentially, the 380/380x could have been 1080p slayers, 390/390x for 1440p and then maybe a Titan competitor for $800 or so, which would handle 4k well.

Keep in mind, if AMD's cards are good enough and well priced, NVidia could potentially slash prices. If the 390 or 390x beats SLI 970s, I may sell my 970s and grab a 390/390x.

Also, the image of what the cards will apparently look like has been floating around the internet, it looks pretty small. IMO, I think if it's too small, it's going to look ridiculous in mid sized or full sized rigs. If so, I won't even consider 390/390x, even if it would be a logical upgrade for me.
