An Israeli company called Stemrad has developed a body belt that protects people from the worst effects of gamma radiation. Called the Stemrad 360 Gamma, the belt could be a lifesaver for the emergency services in a nuclear accident.

Oren Milstein, the co-founder of Stemrad, says its partially made out of lead and is designed to first and foremost protect the pelvic area, where most of the bodys renewable bone marrow is made, Reuters reports.

At just over 15 kilos, the belt would be wearable for most people. A full body suit to protect all the bodys vital organs such as the liver and thyroid would weigh about 200 kilos, so most people wouldnt be able to wear it.

The belt can protect the wearer for doses of up to 1,000 rads a high level of radiation poisoning that can cause serious illness and even death.

Wonder if nukes will even matter anymore after this invention. Read more below.

The question I have is how far from an initial nuclear blast would this belt protect from the radiation? Obviously if you're in the blast area as it goes off this won't matter, but I'm curious about the distance before someone hits those 1,000 rads that the belt says will protect them from.

Wonder if nukes will even matter anymore after this invention. Read more below.

I'm going to have to say yes as this belt won't protect people from getting disintegrated from the yield, back to what I was curious about with the distance of the radiation before it stops working and then you have the food and water supply that would be effected from nukes.
