Minecraft Faq.
Q. How do I make glass?

A. Gather some sand and coal, put the sand in the top slot of a furnace and the coal in the bottom slot. The furnace will automatically begin to make glass.

Q. I don't know what to put in my base!

A. Use this thread. viewtopic.php?f=35&t=14998
You should be able to somehow weave this into your existing base.

Q. I found some underground and there was a chest and a box with a burning monster in it?

A. It is a dungeon, loot the chests for items. The burning thing is a monster spawner but it will only spawn monsters if you are not playing on peaceful. You cannot pick up the spawner, you can only break it.

Q. I found some gray blocks in some sand and they gave me these round balls when I mined them?

A. That is clay and you can either combine the four balls back into a clay block or you can bake them in a furnace to make bricks which can then be combined into brick blocks.

Q. I found something that looks like bamboo?

A. It's a reed and you can use it to make paper. Paper can be used to make books, and books can be used to make bookshelves. Reeds can be placed on dirt adjacent to water and they grow to be up to three blocks in height. With enough time and patience a single reed block can become an unlimited supply.

Q. I found a monster in peaceful?

A. The smallest slimes (little green blocks that hop) are about as dangerous as sheep. Perhaps less so as even a small fall will kill them. As such, they can spawn in peaceful.

Q. I can't break any blocks?

A. Hold down the button. Unlike creative, breaking blocks in alpha takes time. (The amount of time depends on what tool you are using.)

Q. My trees won't grow?

A. Trees must be planted in dirt (a single block will do) and they need a 5x5x5* space that contains nothing but leaves or air in which to grow. (The fact that leaves do not count means that trees planted with only two spaces between them will grow.) They also need light (putting a single torch directly next to the sapling will do it for underground farming). Last but not least, they need time. Sometimes quite a bit of it, the growing time is a bit random. Contrary to real world expectations trees do NOT need water.

*I am not entirely sure on the vertical space requirement here.

Q. I found a ?

A. This is the bottom of the world. Careful, there ARE holes in it and you CAN fall through to your death. This is a feature not a bug.

Q. I fell through the world/floor/ground and died?

A. Never dig straight down. Ever. Also, read the previous question and it's answer.

Q. What can I use slime balls, milk, or eggs for?

A. Nothing at the moment.

Q. How do I make a torch?

A. Take one piece of coal ( which comes from mining NOT which comes from mining ) and put it over a stick ( ) in the crafting area on the inventory screen (i) or the crafting screen opened by right clicking a workbench. Sticks can be made by putting two wood planks over each other. Wood planks are gotten from logs. Logs are obtained by punching down trees with your fist. (Or you can use an axe.)
Q. How do I get a snowy map?

A. The odds for getting a snow covered map seem to be one in five, so just keep creating new worlds till you get lucky.

Q. How do I get infinite water?

A. Water that is only one unit deep will refill if two or more spring blocks (water with no current) are near each other. The simplest way to get an infinite pool of water is to place to water springs like such:
(top down view)

Q. How do I get infinite lava?

A. You can't without cheating. Lava does not create new spring blocks like water does.

Q. Why won't the water refill?

A. If water is more than one unit deep, it will not make new water spring blocks to replace ones that are removed from the surface. To fill in a hole like this you have to place solid blocks under the water till the top layer is only one unit deep. Then when the surface is calm with no currents you can remove the solid blocks from under it.

Q. I thought sand and gravel fell down, why do I have a roof of it?

A. When the game generates the cave system it doesn't seem to check for falling sand or gravel near the sea level. (As near as I have been able to figure out anyway as I have seen gravel fall down from overhangs and the fallen piles deep within caves and yet still seen sand covered caves next to the shore.) If you add or remove a block next to the suspended sand or gravel it will trigger it to fall.

Q. Why didn't I get anything from breaking a block?

A. Some blocks require specific qualities of picks to successfully mine. Stone and Coal ore can be mined with a wood pick or better. Iron ore requires a stone pick or better. Redstone, Gold ore, and Diamond ore all require an Iron pick or better. Obsidian can only be mined with a diamond pick. As a note, gold picks are treated the same as wooden ones for the purposes of determining what you can mine with them. (The only time gold is actually good is if you make a **** from it.)

Very good map editor

WARNING: YOU MUST EXIT MINECRAFT COMPLETELY BEFORE EDITING.
If you leave Minecraft running while using MCEdit, the clash will corrupt your saves.

Download: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

About: MCEdit is a versatile map editor, designed for moving blocks from one level to another. With it, you can open a level of nearly any type and fly around in glorious 3D with multiple levels of detail! Select millions of blocks and clone them anywhere else in the level. Fill a boxy selection with the block of your choice, or replace one kind of block with another. Export blocks to a "schematic" file for later use. Import a schematic or an entire level into any world using the crane. Move the player or his spawn point. Create and and remove chunks from the world. Fill blackened areas with light. Find bugs!

How To survive You're first nights in minecraft

Beginners Guide To hosting a minecraft server.
This little guide will hopefully help anyone interested in hosting their own servers, or using a Virtual Private server to run off.

There are no minimum specs detailed for running a server, but a dual core PC, 512mb ram and about 500mb of hard drive space is recommended.

Hosting a home server
Probably the easiest way to host a server, but it has many disadvantages and disadvantages:

Advantages:
- Quick and easy to set up
- Easy managing and modifying of server

Disadvantages:
- Changeable IP unless managed otherwise
- High latency and packet loss possible on other clients due to home connection speed limitations

1. So, let's start a basic server! First of all, get the Minecraft_server.exe/jar file from the website [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] , .exe is for Windows and .jar is for OSX/Linux systems. There are known issues with the .jar server file running on Windows.

2. Update your Java if needed first!

3. Double click the server file and let it run! The server will generate the necessary files to modify your server, so make sure the server file is in a dedicated folder at least.

4. Once you've done that, you're best to close off the server window briefly, to modify your server! Look for server.properties and edit it with wordpad or something similar. You'll see a set list of commands in there.

level-name=world //This is the name of the world's folder in your server folder
hellworld=false //This is the nether. Currently in multiplayer it's semi broken
spawn-monsters=false // This obviously allows the spawning of mobs or not
monsters=true //This allows mobs on or off, its NOT the same as SPAWNING them.
online-mode=true //This is to enable an online server. To run LAN, just set this to false
spawn-animals=false //This allows animals or not in the server
pvp=false //This allows player vs player hit damage.
max-players=50 //Maximum number of players allowed on the server
server-ip= //Your IP address of the server. LEAVE THIS BLANK IF YOU'RE ON A CHANGEABLE IP
no-animals=false //This is again not the same as spawning animals. You can give yourself cage spawners, but they wont work if this is set to true.
server-port=25566 //The port of the server. Default is either 25566 or 25565. If you want to run multiple servers on one PC, use different ports to differentiate servers.
white-list=false //This determines whether anyone can enter the server or limited to a list of players you have input.
spawn-protection=16 //Spawn protection is the amount of blocks in a radius where enemies cannot deal damage to you.

5. Now, you want to admin the server? Great! Open ops.text and add your name to a line. If you want other admins on the server, just add more names to that line, otherwise type an admin can type /op <playername> in server

6. white-list.txt allows you to add players to the server list if whitelist is enabled. Otherwise type /whitelist add <playername> in game.

This is the basics of the server. Enjoy!

If people cant connect to your server then you need to
open the ports 25565 ucp and udp.
To do this... go to [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] And scroll down the page and look for your routers name( Your modem ) (you need to know your routers name)
Then Click the game on ports you want to open ( click minecraft)
It will give a quick and easy tutorial to open ports on your type of modem.

Running a Virtual Private Server

Running a VPS is a more effective way to run a Minecraft server. It boasts many advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:
-
More stable dedicated servers (including linux!)
- Lower latency and capability of higher player numbers in a server at once
- Better compatibility with modded servers and plugins (tutorial in advanced thread coming soon!)
- Static IP

Disadvantages:
- Slightly more complicated to moderate forums
- Knowledge of the OS it's being hosted on

Now, lets start off. VPS system can be quite expensive, but the better spec the better the experience. Do not go for 128mb/256mb RAM VPS systems, you'll limit yourself and your players to a choppy and unplayable experience. Hard drive space isnt essential and Minecrafts bandwidth usage isnt too high either (except in the case of 10+ active players at once).

I recommend a Linux VPS system over the Windows one. There are known issues as I've said with the .jar files in Windows, especially if they're modded. So I'll be tutting on the Linux versions of the server in this tutorial.

1. So, now you've bought your VPS server, you've got a login and password. Now what? Now we get our hands dirty! Grab yourself a copy of [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] and
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
PuTTY will help us remotely issue the server commands, and Filezilla will help modify, upload, remove files easily.

2. Run PuTTY and enter your IP address details, you'll be then asked for your username and password, enter those. You're on your VPS server now!

Now, for a few basic commands and explanations:

cd this directs your console to a certain address. For example if minecraft is in files/minecraft, type cd files/minecraft to direct the console there.
mkdir This creates a directory in the folder your console is currently pointing at.
wget This will download the file in question after the hyperlink you put after wget. So for example wget [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] will download the minecraft-server.zip file to the pointed folder.
screen Runs a program/file from the pointed folder with the ability to close the terminal (PuTTY)
reboot Reboots the OS

3. That's the basic commands. There's some others but we'll look into them later. So, lets create a folder now that we're logged in!

mkdir minecraft

4. So now we've created a Minecraft folder in the root directory. Let's point to the folder.

cd minecraft

5. Now we're in. It's empty. Lets fill it. There's 2 ways to do so:
-
wget http://www.minecraft.net/download/minecraft_server.jar

- Open Filezilla, enter your IP, username and password, download the files, or even a previously made server, and literally drag them into your Minecraft folder.

6. Nearly there! So now we've got the basic files in. Lets run the server.

java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui

where
java is the executed form of file
xmx and xms are the variables, the RAM allocated to the server
jar is the type of file being executed
nogui is no interface

7. You should see your region being rendered. You're done! Your dedicated server is up and running. However when PuTTY is closed, so does your server. So to run the server indepentantly,

screen -S minecraft java -Xms1024M -Xmx1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui

screen will run the server independently. We're done!

Filezilla will allow you to change/modify files and reupload them on the fly. Some mods (explained in another thread) allows you to make changes on the fly, some don't, like the server.properties files. You may need to stop and start the server. Ingame, type /stop stops your server. So to rerun the server again, just use the above steps again to get it running via PuTTY.

Stay tuned on a more advanced tutorial; advanced servers and modding

Increase Game Performance

For PCs that run slow, or have integrated graphics, Optimine renders the maps faster, with little impact on visual effects, giving smoother gameplay experience. Details [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

This mod improves FPS, especially for slower computers. Gains of 20FPS and more are common.

Instructions:
1) Locate your minecraft.jar file. On Windows, it's in %APPDATA%/.minecraft/bin
2) Create a backup of minecraft.jar
3) Open minecraft.jar in an archive editor (WinRar/7-Zip/etc)
4) Delete the META-INF folder.
5) Copy the files from the downloaded zip file into the jar file, replacing previous files.
6) Run Minecraft and test!

Skinedit
For users that are tired of their Minecraft characters, Skinedit allows custom editing of your characters skin. Details here, but most people will probably download their own, such as [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] .

For people experiencing game crashes/fps issues

Its well known that Minecraft is still buggy. Remember this game is just out of Alpha. There are numerous reasons why it crashes and there is numerous fixes.

OpenGL Error
Update your drivers! For Intel GMA users, download the latest [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] (select Graphics from the menu, most drivers thereafter have support for nearly all Intel cards). For AMD users, download [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] , and Nvidia users download [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] .

Constant Game crashes
There's numerous fixes for this. Try each one to figure out your issue.

- Uninstall Minecraft and redownload. To do this unhide your folders, go to C:/Users/username/appdata/roaming.minecraft (Vista/7), or C:/Documents and Settings/user/appdata/.minecraft (XP), and delete the bin folder and texture pack folder. Run Minecraft again to redownload everything

- Some Java releases are known to be choppy and crash the game frequently. The most stable release is [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] for Minecraft. Select the correct operating system and download.

- Sound can sometimes be an issue too. Update your drivers or test the game with your sound disabled.

Doubt it took you 4 hours to make because I just so happen to find half the stuff here copied from another forum.

It doesn't take much to copy one line, paste it into google, and find out you didn't make it.
