Helldivers 2 Is Making PC Players Sign Into PSN Again

4
An upcoming update for Helldivers 2 will require PC players to link to their PlayStation Network account, which has caused an uproar from some fans.

Over the past few years, PlayStation has been making moves within the PC community and bringing several of its big first-party exclusives to Steam and the Epic Games Store, including Spider-Man Remastered, God of War, and even The Last of Us. Those have all been successful ventures, but the biggest win for PlayStation so far is undoubtedly Helldivers 2, which has been a hit with PC players since it launched.

When Helldivers 2 first launched on PC, it was supposed to require Steam accounts to link to the PlayStation Network, although this was eventually made optional due to "technical issues" which is likely referring to the server issues. It seems those issues have been worked out, though, as PlayStation has announced that the grace period is about to expire.

Over on the game's official Steam page, an update was shared that revealed that the PSN sign-in requirement will be made mandatory again on May 6. PlayStation claims this is because account linking "plays a critical role in protecting our players and upholding the values of safety and security provided on PlayStation and PlayStation Studios games".

The update also says that account linking is being made mandatory to protect players from griefing and abuse by enabling bans for anyone who takes part in these actions. On the flip side, having a PlayStation Network account will also allow those who have been banned to appeal and get their account back.

As of May 6th, all new Helldivers 2 players on Steam will be required to connect their Steam account to a PlayStation Network account. Current players on Steam will start to see the mandatory login from May 30th and will be required to have linked a Steam and PlayStation Network account by June 4th.

As you can probably imagine, a lot of Helldivers 2 players aren't too happy about needing a PSN account. Even then, that hasn't stopped the Steam page from being hit with a ton of new negative reviews. Helldivers 2 still stands with a "Very Positive" rating on Steam currently, but if you look at the recent reviews, you'll see most of them are negative and reference the new account linking process.

One negative review reads, "game is good, for now even the best of this year. but since 9th of may you need a psn account", while another says, "Forcing your players to make a PSN account months after launch is extremly undemocratic". It's clear how a lot of PC players feel about requiring a PSN account to play Helldivers 2 and, although it does seem like it's going to have an impact on the Steam reviews and overall player morale, it's unlikely to be changed.
