Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is Bringing Back The Joker

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is bringing back the Joker, having just revealed the first gameplay footage starring yet another version of the iconic character. This reveal arrives only a week after Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League teased the return of DC's biggest villain.

Warning! Batman: Arkham series spoilers ahead.

Unlike Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham games, Kill the Justice League was designed as a live service third-person shooter, yet one that is still set in the same universe. Due to that state of affairs, having it feature the Clown Prince of Crime is a bit tricky, not least because this series' version of the Joker has been dead since Batman: Arkham Asylum.

The Joker is Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's First Free DLC Character
Rocksteady still found a way to circumvent that inconvenience, with the latest episode of the studio's Kill the Justice League dev diary confirming as much. Specifically, the upcoming Suicide Squad game will introduce an alternate version of the Joker as a DLC character once its inaugural season launches in March. Much like the rest of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's post-launch characters, the Joker will be free to unlock through regular play.

The January 22 dev diary saw Rocksteady's studio director, Darius Sadeghian, explain that the Joker featured in the upcoming game originates from one of the alternate universes—Elseworlds, in the game's jargon—that Brainiac creates over the course of the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League story campaign. Unlocking him will seemingly require reaching the shooter's endgame loop.

This version of the Harlequin of Hate is somewhat younger than the one that died five years before the events of the upcoming game. Rocksteady says it opted to return the character to his roots, so to speak, by designing a version of the Joker that is somewhat more agreeable than the Batman: Arkham one, as underlined by the fact he actually had his own Suicide Squad in his home universe. Players can hence expect a character that isn't quite a supervillain, while still being completely unhinged in his own way.

The Joker's traversal abilities in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be based around a rocket-powered umbrella. The newly shared gameplay footage shows a plain black version of that accessory, although there's no doubt that players will be able to customize the umbrella to their heart's content. On that note, the new developer diary saw Sadeghian reiterate that Kill the Justice League will be "one of the most generous, player-friendly post-launch experiences available," noting that the shooter will be free of battle passes and paywalls, while its in-game shop will be solely dedicated to cosmetics. Rocksteady's Suicide Squad game launches February 2 for PC on and consoles.
