Call of Duty Developer Infinity Ward is Expanding Again

3.7
One of the development studios behind the Call of Duty franchise, Infinity Ward, has announced the opening of a brand-new studio to expand its operations. This new studio has opened up in another part of the United States, with positions open for developers to apply. Much like with its other offices, this expansion of Infinity Ward is happening to continue development on the long-running Call of Duty series.

Infinity Ward was first founded in 2002 and is the original developer behind the Call of Duty series. This includes the very first game in the series, the original Modern Warfare trilogy, and the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot alongside its 2022 sequel. The studio continued to work on the series, alongside Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games, and Raven Software. The focus on developing Call of Duty games isn't slowing down either, as Infinity Ward is recruiting for new positions at its newest studio branch.

According to an advertisement from Infinity Ward (that was archived by VGC), the studio has expanded its operations into Austin, Texas. Infinity Ward is hiring several new roles, including UI and design positions. Since the studio just opened, this branch of the Call of Duty developer is likely in an early planning stage for the next title, or supporting games that are in development or already out. The listing mentions how the developer will be looking to create "new and innovative experiences" for the series by using state-of-the-art tech.

This expansion of Infinity Ward comes after the studio formed a new team in Spain earlier this year, which was built as a joint venture between Call of Duty mobile game developer Digital Legends and the studio's branch from Barcelona. This team would be led by Infinity Ward's Riccard Linde, the studio's director of art and technology, and focuses on creating art for the franchise.

Infinity Ward was responsible for helping ship the third game in the rebooted Modern Warfare trilogy. Sledgehammer Games took up the reins as the main developer of 2023's Modern Warfare 3, with Infinity Ward assisting instead in a bit of a role reversal. Unlike the prior two entries, Modern Warfare 3 was lambasted by critics and fans, earning mixed-to-negative reviews on launch.

The game's short and lackluster campaign was criticized during the early preview period, with many also pointing to how rushed the game feels. This is apparently supported by allegations of how Activision reportedly rushed the development of Modern Warfare 3, due to plans of it initially being an expansion for the previous entry. Despite not being a critical smash, Modern Warfare 3 has still sold well, though not to the same extent as Modern Warfare 2. With Infinity Ward's expansion, development on the next Modern Warfare game will hopefully go a bit smoother.
