Grumpyface Studios has something to prove with their remake

4.5
In Castle Doombad, you are the villain and it’s up to you to stop the world’s heroes from meddling in your dirty deeds. In this expanded overhaul of the original, Grumpyface Studios gives you access to over 35 traps and minions to defend your castle with.

It can be compared to a blend of Bloons, Plants vs. Zombies and Orcs Must Die!

This will be GrumpyFace Studios' first self-published title since their first title Wispin in 2010.

The studio is best known for working in collaboration with Adult Swim and Cartoon Network, whom they developed seven titles with over the span of ten years. A few years ago, the department within Adult Swim that GrumpyFace Studios was working with closed, according to President and Creative Director Chris Graham.

Graham, who I had the pleasure of talking to at PAX West, said that he then went on a multi-year campaign to buy the rights back, which was successful last year.

This new version of the Castle Doombad will aim to achieve and expand upon the original’s vision, Graham said, with plans to add everything that didn’t make it into the original due to budget or time restraints.

The original Castle Doombad, which was released for Android and iOS through Adult Swim Games, was selected as one of Apple’s “Best Apps of 2014” as well as Metacritic’s “25 Best Reviewed iOS Games of 2014.”

Unlike the original, the new Castle Doombad will feature 2-player co-op as well as top-to-bottom remade graphics. It also won’t be coming to phones, it will be brought to Steam and Switch with new content and features to boot.

Porting the game to console presented some unique challenges but Graham said the team was careful to have the new control scheme feel like the way the game was meant to be played.

The controls felt intuitive and natural when I was playing the game’s demo. I controlled a ghost as I traveled around the multiple levels of the castle and I set up spike traps, treadmills, cannons, and more. Looking at all the traps to choose from for my run through the demo was difficult and I’m looking forward to running different combos of traps when in the full game.

Castle Doombad doesn’t currently have an expected release date but is expected to launch later this year.
