Netflix has launched a cloud gaming beta test on TV

Netflix has launched a cloud gaming service in limited beta form.

A small number of subscribers in the UK and Canada can access the service, which is now available on select TVs and will come to PC and Mac in the coming weeks through Netflix’s website on supported browsers.

The test supports two games: first-party title Oxenfree from Night School Studio, and Molehew’s gem-mining arcade game Mining Adventure.

Players use their smartphone as a controller to play games on TV, while members will be able to play using a keyboard and mouse on PC and Mac.

Supported devices for TV gaming include Amazon Fire TV streaming media players, Chromecast with Google TV, LG TVs, Nvidia Shield TV, Roku devices and TVs, Samsung smart TVs, and Walmart ONN, with more to follow.

“We’ve been focused on creating a great gaming experience for our members since 2021 when we added mobile games to Netflix,” said the company’s VP of games, Mike Verdu. “Our goal has always been to have a game for everyone, and we are working hard to meet members where they are with an accessible, smooth, and ubiquitous service.”

He added: “While we’re still very early in our games journey, we’re excited to bring joy to members with games.”

Netflix is working on an original, multiplatform, triple-A game at a recently established studio in California, which is led by Overwatch executive producer Chacko Sonny.

The team also includes the studio’s creative director Joseph Staten, the Halo veteran who left Microsoft in March, and art director Raf Grassetti, who previously held the same position at God of War developer Santa Monica Studio.
