Halo Infinite Removes Fan-Favorite Maps and Modes in Season 3

With the release of Season 3, Halo Infinite has removed lots of fan-favorite maps and modes from matchmaking. Season 3 of Halo Infinite was highly anticipated by fans, but the new content seems to have had an adverse effect on some older maps.

Season 3 has been generally well-received by fans of the game, with particular praise reserved for the new equipment added to Halo Infinite. Players like the new maps, and the narrative event that has been teased for Season 3 looks far beyond what anyone initially expected. But the news that it has come at the expense of older maps hasn't gone down well with players.

The changes to matchmaking went under the radar in the first few days of release. However, YouTuber Mint Blitz released a video pointing out everything that had been removed from the Quick Play and Big Team Battle multiplayer playlists, which are the most popular playlists in the game. Perhaps the most controversial change is the removal of Halo Infinite's remake of The Pit, which has been wiped from Quick Play completely. All variants of the Attrition game mode have also been removed, as well as the maps Argyle, Behemoth, and Catalyst. Behemoth had only recently been updated by 343 Industries, and Catalyst was only added in Season 2. It's an enormous amount of content for the game to lose, especially after it has faced criticism in the past for the amount of maps and modes featured.

It should be noted that the maps haven't been removed from Halo Infinite entirely. Players can still access them in custom games, with the recently-added custom game browser making them easier to find. However, for any player that wants to simply jump in and play on these maps, this isn't possible anymore. The main issue is Halo Infinite's low population. In some regions, Quick Play and Big Team Battle are the only playlists that players can consistently find online matches. This effectively removes these maps and modes from the game for many players. Unfortunately, it seems that live service games removing existing content is becoming a common tactic lately. Recently, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 removed the popular Gun Game mode from Season 2 just weeks after it was initially released.

The last thing that 343 Industries needs at the moment is more negative fan reactions to Halo Infinite. The game launched missing plenty of features that were previously staples of the series, and fans were less than impressed. Rumors even suggested that the developer would be removed from the franchise it was founded to be the gatekeeper of. It's taken a while to get the game into a healthier place, with Season 3 promising to be a turning point for Halo Infinite. Hopefully 343 Industries is able to reverse course, and allow players to play on the maps and modes they come to enjoy in Halo Infinite.

Halo Infinite is available now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Didn't they originally promise ten years of support before they sacked half the team? :p
