Elden Ring Creator Looking To Expand Online In Future Games
He states that it's specifically how multiplayer elements meld with "both technology and the game designs" and how creators keep advancing these elements over the years. He specifically mentions Escape From Tarkov as a game he finds compelling regarding multiplayer game design but doesn't go into specifics as to why.
Escape From Tarkov is an extraction-based FPS with a vibrant online community, which essentially created a new subgenre within the FPS community. The game allows players to collect loot and extract it, which they can then trade with other players via the Flea Market. Loot carries over to future sessions, and players, barring some exceptions, lose all their equipment if they die during a raid.
It's possible that this sort of riskier gear system that's affected by other players is what's got Miyazaki so interested, but, of course, there's no way to know for sure. All that's clear is that the acclaimed game designer is undoubtedly intrigued by multiplayer functionality in games.
He goes on to say that others developers are progressing online play and game design "to change the way that the players are involved in the gameplay, and how the players are used as one of the resources for the gameplay."
Elden Ring, and other FromSoftware games before it, have had their well-liked forms of online functionality, with players being able to fight bosses with you, raid your server and attack you, or leave messages for you, but it does appear as though the studio head wants to explore further uses of online functionality in his games (or perhaps in one specific project).
Elden Ring has been developer FromSoftware's biggest title by far, with it recently confirming that the title had sold over 20 million units. However, Miyazaki tells IGN that his team isn't bound to make an Elden Ring sequel, despite its commercial success. "We basically keep creating the game that we want to create, and that's our policy," he stated. "It's very simple."
