Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Has Surpassed 5 Million Lifetime Sales In Japan

Last week, Nintendo reported that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had sold another 42,000 copies in Japan on the Nintendo Switch, pushing it over the 5 million milestone for lifetime sales within the country. (via Gematsu)

As of now, the game has reportedly sold over 48 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most popular Switch titles ever sold. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was initially released in 2017, making its continuous sales numbers very impressive. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is also the re-released definitive edition of the original game that came out back in 2014 and was only released on the Wii U. The Wii U was quickly overshadowed by the release of the Nintendo Switch in 2017, and this definitive edition helped keep Mario Kart 8 up to date for the new console's popularity.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still the most recent mainline Mario Kart game to be released in this long-running franchise. The original Mario Kart was released in 1992 on the NES and has been a consistent title for Nintendo over the years, with new releases on all of their respective consoles. Mario Kart 8 has since become the longest-running title, still receiving updates and new tracks, many of which will be recognized from previous titles by long-time fans.

Most recently, Wave Three DLC tracks were released earlier this month. This wave of new tracks added a total of 7 older tracks into the game, along with two new cups to race in. Nintendo has also announced there will be another three waves of DLC tracks to be released later in 2023, each adding another two cups to race seven new tracks for a total of 24.

The Mario franchise has always been one of the biggest names in Nintendo, with even its own movie being released in April. With the roadmap of the rest of 2023 laid out, it's clear Nintendo isn't quite done with Mario Kart 8 yet, but with no word on what 2024 yet, fans are hoping for some announcement about what is next for the series after the incredible success of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

I do believe that this is pretty much the best game (Mario Kart in general) ever released by Nintendo.
I'd love to try to new iterations of it, but I doubt I'll get a Nintendo any time soon...
