The 25-minute video below showcases an early mission played by Cold Iron Studios’ CEO Craig Zinkievich, its chief creative officer Matt Highison and IGN‘s Ryan McCaffrey.
Announced on Tuesday, Aliens: Fireteam is a co-op third-person survival shooter set 23 years after the original Alien film trilogy.
Players take on the role of Colonial Marines investigating a mysterious distress call from a colony called LV-895, where they come face to face with waves of Xenomorphs.
At a press briefing attended by VentureBeat, Cold Iron’s Zinkievich said the game blends the “survival horror fantasy” of Ridley Scott’s original Alien film with the “action fantasy” of James Cameron’s gung-ho sequel.
Its story is set across four campaigns, each of which includes three missions, and there are five character classes to choose from – Gunner, Demolisher, Technician, Doc, and Recon, each with their own abilities and perks.
The game includes over 30 guns, 80 weapon attachments and some 20 different enemy types, including 11 varieties of Xenomorphs and androids from the Weyland-Yutani corporation.
Aliens: Fireteam has five difficulty levels. As the difficulty increases, so too does the number of enemies and the damage players take, while resources become scarcer.
“As a game designer, I’m really excited about our challenge card system,” Zinkievich said. “This system is a series of cards that the players end up earning that they can play at the beginning of missions when they’re queuing up.
“And they’re really mutators and really change the way that you play the mission. If you play the challenge card successfully, you end up getting additional rewards, additional cosmetics, additional attachments, things like that.”
Aliens: Fireteam will be released for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and Steam in the summer of 2021.
