A reliable Ubisoft leaker has claimed that Watch Dogs is "dead and buried" as a series, so don't get your hopes up about seeing Marcus, Wrench, and Aiden again.

As any Rayman, Beyond Good & Evil, and Splinter Cell fan is well aware of by now, Ubisoft has a lot of series under its belt that it's not doing all that much with, save from the occasional cameo in other releases. While Rayman, Jade, and Sam Fisher have at least shown some signs of life in the past few years, the same can't be said for Watch Dogs, which has been next-to-silent since the disappointing release of Legion.

Although it's fair to say that Watch Dogs Legion wasn't the game that most fans wanted it to be (even if it's DLC was an absolute treat that successfully merged the last two games together), fans have still held out hope that we'd get some kind of new release at some point in the near future. I've got some potentially bad news for you, if you're one of the people holding out hope.

As pointed out on the Watch Dogs subreddit, reliable Ubisoft leaker xj0nathan (who was correct about the release date and existence of Assassin's Creed Mirage and recently teased some cryptic news about Far Cry 7) replied to a comment from a fan asking if there was anything happening for Watch Dogs.

In response, xj0nathan said that Watch Dogs is "dead and buried", noting that the failure of Legion has "destroyed the projects on the license", which apparently included an original battle royale game. With that in mind, any hopes you might have had about a third mainline Watch Dogs game being in the works are probably better off being forgotten about.

Although xj0nathan has been accurate about Ubisoft in the past, it's worth noting that Watch Dogs isn't completely dead, as it was confirmed earlier this year that a Watch Dogs film was in the works. That's not quite the game we were all hoping for, but it does indicate that there's at least a little bit of interest in the series left at Ubisoft. Shame it's the boring first game and not the sublime second.
