The Wall Street Journal‘s Takashi Mochizuki reports that Zelda will be next Nintendo series to debut on mobile devices following the release of the previously announced, repeatedly delayed Animal Crossing game. The piece gives no clear time frame for the Zelda game’s but does peg Animal Crossing to launch this fall. That’s a more specific window than what Nintendo has announced officially—before April 2018.
The Wall Street Journal also stated Nintendo’s Japanese developer DeNA is heading development on the Zelda project, but that’s about the extent of the details. With so many different timelines, gameplay types, and art styles on display throughout the history of The Legend of Zelda, it’s difficult to pin down exactly what a Zelda mobile game might look or play like.
Nintendo’s current mobile titles Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, and Miitomo have seen varying degrees of success, but their profits and cultural impact all pale in comparison to the massive success of Pokémon Go, the augmented reality app Nintendo owns a partial stake in along with The Pokémon Company and developer Niantic.
