Monster Hunter Franchise Reaches Huge Sales Milestone

3.5
Capcom announced that its Monster Hunter franchise has sold more than 100 million copies. The gaming company also commented on sales for some individual titles in the Monster Hunter series. These sales figures have been bolstered by recent entries like Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise, and sure to keep going strong with the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds.

Released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, the original Monster Hunter game was part of a planned three-game series by Capcom that aimed to take advantage of the PS2’s processing potential and online capabilities. Since that initial entry, the Monster Hunter series has grown to include an impressive amount of content with even more to be released, ensuring that sales will continue to rise. This even includes a Monster Hunter and Street Fighter crossover in-game event celebrating Monster Hunter's 20th anniversary.

As reported by Push Square, Capcom has achieved sales of over 100 million units with its popular Monster Hunter series since it was introduced 20 years ago. The giant Japanese video game company stated that Monster Hunter World is the best-selling title in the series since it has sold over 25 million copies. This top-selling title from the popular franchise was released in 2018 and has achieved yearly sales of more than one million units since then. Another notable entry in the ever-growing library, Monster Hunter Rise, is not far behind with more than 15 million copies sold, with its Sunbreak expansion selling eight million units. The franchise has grown considerably in popularity with recent titles added to the library and Monster Hunter Wilds scheduled for a 2025 release.

Capcom released Monster Hunter Rise in 2021, followed by a huge 2022 premium expansion for the base game, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. Since then, Capcom has been employing a strategy that focuses on wider platform support and long-term worldwide digital sales for the franchise. As a result, total sales of the Monster Hunter franchise have now surpassed 100 million units, making it Capcom’s second best-selling franchise after Resident Evil.

Aside from exciting additions to the already-huge Monster Hunter library, the announcement of Monster Hunter Wilds, the latest title in series that is scheduled for release next year, has increased interest from fans and helped to fuel sales even further. The growing popularity might even win the franchise new fans who have not played any Monster Hunter games before.

It remains to be seen how fans of the franchise will feel about Monster Hunter Wilds, but Capcom probably does not have to worry much about that given its recent sales report for the series. The likelihood of expansions for this upcoming release, Monster Hunter game updates, and other content possibly in the making might drive sales figures even further than anyone expects.
