How to open a ps3

Tools Needed

1 Small Socket Wrench
inch Socket
(1) T-10 Star Tip Point that fits inch Socket
Philips Screw Driver

How to Do It:

1. Remove the Warranty Sticker

2. Behind the Warranty Sticker youll find a star tip screw. So set up your socket wrench with the star tip point and unscrew the screw.

3. Remove the Screw and Remove the Plastic PS3 Top Plate

4. Now youre looking at the console youll have to remove (7) Screws, Notice (6) of them will be long and 1 will be shorter than the others.

5. Remove all the screws, once thats finished start at the back of the console and pop the unit open with your hands.

6. Now you should have the console open and youll seen the disc drive and power supply.

How to open a controller

1. Remove the five screws located on the back of the PS3 controller. Set them aside in a place you won't lose them or accidentally knock them over while you're working on the controller.

2. Turn the controller upside down with the bottom of the handles facing you. Position your hands so that each thumb is pressing into the center of the controller between the two handles on the side facing you, not the top of the controller. You'll notice a thin line running around the controller where the top and bottom pieces are joined. Place your thumbs so that one is under the line, on the bottom half of the controller, and the other is above the line on the top half of the controller.

3. Press inward with your thumbs while pulling the pieces away from each other. A clip is located inside and holds the two pieces together. You might need to apply a lot of force before the controller pops open. If you cannot get the controller open using your hands, insert a small, flat piece of metal into the slit between the two pieces and push upward until the controller pops open.

4. Reassemble the controller by snapping the two pieces back together again and replacing the screws back into the holes. Make sure the screws are tight. If the controller won't work, try taking it apart again. Make sure everything lines up properly when snapping the controller back together.

PS3 SIXAXIS LED Mod

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Pleas note that I cannot be held responsable for anything that happens to your controller. Modding the controller is at your own risk.

This is best done on a clear workspace where you have lots of room. There are about 12 small pieces within the Sixaxis, and it wouldn't be very nice if you lost a few, or even one piece.

Parts needed:
3 volts LED - (3mm recommended) Any color
1/4 watts 47 Ohms Resister "Yellow - Purple - Black"
30 gauge wires
PS3 controller
Tiny Philip screw driver

Step 1 - Opening the PS3 controller
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

First off, lets make sure the PS3 controller is off. Press the home button, then scroll down to turn off controller. Once you done so, take the Tiny philip screw driver and unscrew the 5 screws from the bottom of the PS3 controller. After you unsrewed the screws, lift up the top of the Sixaxis, "Where R1, R2, L1 and L2" is at. And push upwards. There is a clipping at the bottom piece where the Start, Select and PS3 Home button is at.

Demostration

*That is how it looks like, try not to pull to hard, it can break. Just firmly press upwards away from the Analog area.

Once you got the Sixaxis open; It should look like this

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Becareful and unhook the batter since its not really needed at the moment, and it will get in our way.

After you remove the battery, it will be like this now.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

You can remove the 2 battery brace, since they will fall off anyways, lol. And there is a little black cap for the manual power off button at the bottom left corner, make sure you dont lose that. Unscrew the silver screw at the top middle of this image.

Now we are at this stage,

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

You should be now able to dislocate the controller body from the case. Once you remove the circuit board off that plastic board. You will end up with this.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Carefully peel the plastic sheet, upwards, and unplug it from the board.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Place that somewhere safe and NOT near the solder iron.

Now you should have a clean standalone circuit board.

Top View

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Okay, now remove the analog stick; They should just pop right off

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

You will be soldering where I marked red.

Lets take a closer look at each location, and to see where you will be soldering.

For the positive current, you will be soldering here.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

For the negitive side, you will be soldering here;

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Cut 2 pieces of 30 gauge wires, about 2-4 inches each. I suggest 4 inches, since you may have problems, a few times.

You can solder the wires to them now, it is alot easier to; Once you got the wires solder to those points, you can start creating the LED circuit. The resistor must be solder on to the shorter leg of the LED.

Here is an ASCII art of how it will be;

{ + } --------[LED]-------|------////[47 Ohms]/////-------- { - }

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Solder the LED circuit to the wires you solder to the Controller board.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Ok, you are done with the somewhat hard part. Before you can put it back together, you must make some changes to the Controller parts.

You should see a small piece of rubber, with 3 connections. Start, Select and PS3 Home.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

You will need to cut the white piece, since it will go over the LED. But the reason we are cuttin is, because it will press against the LED and wont allow it to function correctly. "Simply, it wont piece back together, because of the LED is in the way"

You have to cut about 3/4 of its size,

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Also, there is a piece on the flat plastic board that the circuit sits on, that have to be modify aswell. Since the LED legs have to go through it. Just cut, or burn with the solder iron, a path for the LED legs.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Now you can place everything back together, once you have placed the LED in its new home. It can take some time to put it back together. Took me about an hour to put it back correctly.

If you have any extra wires, just place them under the D-Pad. (left and right)

How to fix the YLOD

You will need:

1.) Heat gun (temperature controlled preferably).
2.) Isopropyl alcohol (acquire from chemist).
3.) Vacuum cleaner or compressed air blower.
4.) Phillips screw driver.
5.) Flat blade screw driver or slotted torx bit.

Instructions

1. Remove warranty sticker and rubber foot thats positioned above hard drive bay.
This will invalidate any warranty.

2. Using a small flat blade screw driver or slotted torx bit, unscrew cover plate screw.

3. Slide cover plate towards the left until it stops and lift off.

4. Remove all Phillips screws marked noting size and position.

5. Hinge case towards you until disengaged and then tilt towards the left. See below.

6. Remove ribbon cable by carefully lifting black part of connector (locking tab).

7. Lift/tilt blue ray drive towards the right whilst disconnecting power cable and the large ribbon (lift tab) underneath.

8. Remove 5 screws and the earth wire screw on psu, and unplug connector plug.

Before removal of psu unplug small bnc connector (black wire) and remove tape on side of psu, now lift off psu.

9. Now remove the wide ribbon from connector (lift tab) unscrew the four screws on the Bluetooth board and remove.

10. Remove hard drive cover.

11. Unscrew blue hard drive screw and disengage hard drive by sliding towards gap in the bay.

12. Remove hard drive, see below.

13. Unscrew 4 screws holding the bracket, on/off and eject control panel. Remove small ribbon (lift tab) and remove control panel.

14. Unscrew 8 screws.

15. Lift enclosure out of plastic base, see below.

16. Now unclip black rear panel and remove.

17. Unscrew 4 screws and remove sprung brackets, see below.

18. Lift of metal cover plate whilst allowing ribbons to pass through gaps in plate without damage, see below. (Taking note where heat sink rubbers are positioned).

19. Supporting fan assembly turn board over, remove fan power connector and fan.

20. Remove 2 screws holding plate to hard drive connector and unplug battery connector.
Now remove plate.

21. Clean off old heat sink compound from the 2 mainprocessors using Isopropyl alcohol making sure all traces of the old heat sink compound has gone.

22. Clean both touch plates on bottom of fan/heat sink assembly with Isopropyl alcohol until all traces of the old heat sink compound has gone.

23. Now using a vacuum cleaner or compressed air blower get rid of all dust build up in the case and on all component parts of the ps3 (pay special attention to the fan assembly and heat sink fins(MUST BE CLEAR OF DUST).

24. Typical example of dust build up.

Ps3 case (dusty).
Heat sink plates before
heat sink compound removed (dusty).

25. Once cleaned you should now have a nice pile of bits that looks something like this, see below.
Now for the tricky bit!

26. Check the top metal cover plate (underside) for burn-in marks, as you can see below this ps3 got very hot before it yloded!

27. Place the ps3 mother board on a flat heat resistive surface (kitchen work top or melamine shelf will be fine).

28. Turn heat gun on and set temperature to 350 deg and the fan speed to low (to high and it will move the surface mount bits).Allow gun to get up to temperature before continuing!

29. Using a circular motion hold heat gun over areas outlined below (keep heat gun an inch above
board/components at all times).

30. CPU side first.

31. After 15 to 20 seconds move onto the next area.

32. Once all marked areas have been heated/reflowed on the mother board LEAVE for at least 10 to 15 minutes to cool. (DO NOT MOVE MOTHER BOARD WHILE COOLING).

33. A popping noise may be heard during cooling, dont worry this is normal.

34. NON CPU side.

35. After 10 to 15 seconds move onto the next area.

36. Once all marked areas have been heated/reflowed on the mother board LEAVE for at least 10 to 15 minutes to cool. (DO NOT MOVE MOTHER BOARD WHILE COOLING).

37. A popping noise may be heard during cooling dont worry this is normal. Heat sink compound still on in this picture, remove before reflowing. Heat sink rubber pads still on in this picture remove
before reflowing also hold ribbons out of way while reflowing

Congratulations!!

You have just repaired youre yloded ps3 mother board.

38. Now its time to apply new heat sink compound to the 2 processors, when doing this its always best to follow the manufacturers instructions but I believe the process is the same with all types (please check instructions that come with paste), before continuing

39. The paste I am using is called AKASA 450 its a silver based compound with a thermal conductivity of 9.24w/m deg c and an operating range of 0 to 200 deg c. You can buy it from most pc shops but I get mine from my local Maplin ( I have been told that there is a better compound on the market called arctic silver but I havent tried it as yet so the choice is yours).

40. Use syringe supplied and dispense a small worm of compound from top to bottom on the left hand side of processor chip, now using credit card supplied spread compound evenly and thinly over processor face (to much is bad and not enough is also bad) the ideal amount is when you can almost see through the paste.

41. Now repeat on the other processor.

42. See below.
NOW IT IS TIME TO REASEMBLE THE PS3.

What's this thread for?

Numerous things. To help people understand the general concept of lag, which leads to finding glitches. Information on how to make a lagswitch. The different ways to lag. And to offer help to those who are still confused. Also, alot of people lately have been making threads asking about lag. This is to clean up those also

What can make you lag

Standby
On some modems there is a little button called a standby. This enables you to lag within a game and you can do certain glitches. Not all modems have one though.

Magic Switch
An alternative is to make a lag switch. Search google for "Lag Switch" or "Make A Lag Switch". There are alot of tutorials on how to make these.

Other Ways to Lag
If u have a router next to you, you can unplug the wire coming FROM your modem into your router. It does the same effect as a standby. You can also download a lag emulator. Search Google for that too. You can also use a program called net tools, ask a friend how to use it/set it up.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lag Concept
When you lag inside a game, you stop on others screens while on your screen your still going. Enabling you to do lots of **** with it. Now there are many things u can come across using it: Slides, Different Gun Glitches, People see you somewhere where you really arent, etc. Now finding a glitch with lag in socom 3 isnt as easy as socom 2. Socom 3 there are alot of diffrent things..like more animations, smoother gameplay and so on. These things cause there to not be as many slides, cuz the lag will completely block any animations that might have gone by and catch up. Although one exeption is the cable glitch. When you do it, you stay in the same position you started from, but in the spot when you stopped lagging. This is how the perfect swim in air was found.

In the lobby though using the lag to catch up is the way most glitches are done. Take the universal glitch for example..when it catches up the room you made is the room you tried joining before.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

F.A.Q's

Q: What makes me lag the most?
A: It all depends on your internet speed. Most of the time a standby will make u lag the most effectively. Although i have heard of some peoples standbys not doing anything. The order for the fastest is Standby/Pulling Cord (FROM MODEM) Lag Emulater > LagSwitch > Pulling Cord (FROM PS2)

Q: Why do i need to lag?
A: -Cuz some glitches need u to have it, if u cant oh well, theres alot of other cool stuff that you can see on ur own screen that is just as cool. Or for some people, FOR TEH LULZ.

Q: I get disconnected alot when I lag, why is this?
A: -You dont have infinite lag, theres only a certain amount of time u have. It varys alot so just figure how long you have.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

How To Make A Lagswitch

Step One
Take your e-thernet cord and find a spot, mainly torwards an end, find a spot and cut 2-3 inches of the insulation off, not through the cord, just the insulation around the wires inside. Now there are two wires inside you need, orange stripped and orange solid (no stripes).

Step Two
Now you will see wires inside, but find the orange set, there are two seperate them and you should have a solid orange, and a stripped orange. Take the solid orange.

Step Three
Take the solid orange wire and cut the cord in half. Now strip about an inch(1 inch) off of both ends of the solid orange wire you have cut in half. Now after you stripp the solid orange wire you will now see metal copper prons/wires.

Step Four
Now take both ends of the solid orange wires you stripped and place the copper prons/wires on the switch (light switch) such as below, now either tape, screw, glue, and etc. Make sure you have those wires places stuck there on all times, so you dont get disconnected.

How to create your own PS3 theme.

Here's one method to create your own ps3 theme for use with firmware 2.0.

1. Download PS3_Custom_Theme_v101-E.zip ( [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] )
* PS3_Custom_Theme_e.pdf is the PlayStation 3 Custom Theme Guideline. Please read this for a more information.
2. Unzip the (2) folders, p3tcompiler_v101 and sample.
* The images are located in the 01 folder located inside sample.
3. Use the images in 01 as a guideline for creating your own.
* Use the same file format, size, and naming convention. Most of the icons on the xmb are .png format, 128 x128 pixels in size, and have a file name Icon.#.png
* Keep track of the filename and the icon. Use the ps3 custom theme guideline to match these up. As an example Icons.6.png is the Users Icon.
* You can also have 16 backgrounds. There are 3 in the sample. Use the same naming convention, a_HD.jpg and a_SD.jpg through p_HD.jpg and p_SD.jpg
4. Edit the sample.xml file.
1. Edit the Infotable
* Theme Name
* Url
* Author
* Genre
* Version
* Comment
2. Add your backgrounds.
* bgimagetable>
bgimage hd="a_HD.jpg" sd="a_SD.jpg" />
bgimage hd="b_HD.jpg" sd="b_SD.jpg" />
bgimage hd="c_HD.jpg" sd="c_SD.jpg" />
bgimage hd="d_HD.jpg" sd="d_SD.jpg" />
bgimage hd="e_HD.jpg" sd="e_SD.jpg" />
/bgimagetable>
3. Save the sample.xml with the name of your theme.
5. Drag yourtheme.xml onto p3tcompiler.exe and a dos window will come up.

Ps3Eye camera in Windows XP&VISTA
The PS3Eye camera driver and software works with both Windows XP and Windows Vista 32 and 64-bit.

Step by step Installation guide:

- Before we start make sure, that your PS3Eye camera is NOT plugged into your PC - And any previous versions of PS3Eye Driver/Software most be un-installed and completely removed.

- Download and run the latest PS3EyeSetup file by clicking on this link:
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] .

- Click Install and follow the setup process.

- Once complete, plug in the PS3 camera into your USB drive.

After the following the steps above, and installation is complete, run 'PS3Eye Test App' from your desktop or start menu.

If your installation has been successful the Test App, should recognise the webcam driver in upper right corner - Press on the 'start capture' button and the camera should become visible and working.

Now your Playstation Eye Camera should be working with almost all Windows Apps - Enjoy!

Troubleshooting for XP users:

Sometimes after installation, and camera is plugged into your USB - windows still doesn't recognise the drivers and software will not be fully working (some .dll files will be missing) - instead a 'balloon' will pop up in the lower right corner of your screen, with the message: "Windows has found a new device" click on this, and follow the windows automatic driver wizard, it will now automatically find the missing drivers and files, and install them - after this things should work.

If this guide has still not helped you, you are more than welcome to PM me here on the board, or via the IRC server, and I'll be happy to help out

Changing your User Picture

Now we all know we've hated that little user icon once in a while when we turn on our ps3's! Heres how to change them!

1) Find a picture you want as your User picture. Make sure its about 100x100 for optimum looks. You can use bigger, but it wont look too good.

2) Put it on your ps3 by any means you can, Usb or off the ps3 browser. It should (Duh) be in the Picture section.

3)Log in as the User whos picture you want to change, then highlight the username and press Triangle.

4)Go to Information, it should be the last one down.

5) You should have a screen with that pesky avatar and the user name. Click the Avatar.

6) Select one from the list there, or the one you want from the option which is there.

7) Voila. Some nice eye candy.

How to fully disassemble your PS3 !
b] I would like to take the time to say that I cannot be held responsible if you mess up your PS3 in any way, so do it at your own risk !!![/b]

Also, please make sure that the PS3's power cable is disconnected at all times during this tutorial.

I suggest that you give yourself a lot of time and that you have a lot of space to work with as it can get tricky at some points!

For this tutorial you will need:

    A phillips flat head screwdriver

    A torx

    A small flatheaded screwdriver

1.

On the left side/ bottom of the PS3 there are a few rubber feet that help the console stand upright. The first screw that needs to be removed is underneath the rubber foot in the picture below (circled in red). The foot can be pried out using a small screw driveror any other flat tool. Once this has been removed you will see that there is a Torx security screw. You will either need a Torx screwdriver, or a flat head screwdriver that will fit in the screw.

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

2.

Once this screw has been removed, slide the top of the case to the left. You may need to use a bit of force to slide it if your doing this for the first time. After the top slides as far as it will go, lift the top and it should come off (see the picture below)

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

3.

Once you have taken the top off, there will be another cover underneath. You will need to remove the 7 long screws shown in the photo below (circled in red)

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

4.

After the 7 screws have been removed, gently lift up the back corners of the top half of the console. There are 2 small clips near the back that you may need to undo with a small screwdriver. Now the top of the console should just lift off (with a bit of gentle force) and you will see the main insides of the PS3.

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

5.

Now the power supply (the silver box on the left) needs to be removed. Remove the screws circled in red, and take out the plug, and the power supply will just lift out.

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

6.

Also, take out the mains plug in the back of the power supply. The power supply should now be completely disconnected from the PS3. After the power supply is removed, the Bluetooth board (in the 60GB models, it also has wireless). Unscrew the 4 screws and unplug the ribbon cable and the board will just lift out

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

7.

Now to remove the Blu-ray drive. This is fairly easy. Lift the drive up about 2 and you will see a really wide ribbon cable connecting the drive to the motherboard. Unplug it. There will also be a plug near the front of the Blu-ray drive. Unplug it aswell. The drive will then just lift out.

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

8.

You should now see this:

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

9.

Next, we have to remove the small circuit board that has the Reset and Eject buttons. This board is attached to a small metal bracket. Remove the 4 screws holding the board and the metal bracket and unplug the small ribbon cable. The board should now easily lift out.

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]
10.

Once you have done this remove these screws circled in red in the picture below:

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

11.

After the screws are removed, gently lift out the whole motherboard along with the back panel like the pics below: Make sure you have taken out the plastic cover with the HDD sticker on it! Otherwise the clips on it will get bent!

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

12.

After the bottom of the PS3 case is out of the way, you can admire the huge-ass cooling system on the bottom of the motherboard.

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

13.

After your done looking at the hugeness of the fan, remove the plastic back panel. The are 4 small plastic clips (2 on either side of the motherboard) tht you need to lift to take off the back panel.

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

14.

Flip the motherboard back over. Unscrew the 4 screws (circled in red) holding 2 metal brackets down. Once these screws are undone, take off the 2 metal brackets.

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

It should now look like this:

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

15.

After that, flip the motherboard over again. Now gently pull up on the heatsink. Be gentle here. The cooling system will lift up off the CPU and GPU and come off completely. A bit of force will be required here as the heatsink will be stuck down to the CPU and GPU with white thermal paste.

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

16.

On the bottom of the heat sink and on the CPU and GPU will be white thermal paste. This is used to help transfer heat from the chip to the heat sink. Do not touch or eat this stuff! Dont bother cleaning it off either, unless you have fresh thermal paste to put on it again when you reassemble the PS3.

[center] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] [/center]

17.

After you get the heat sink off, you can lift up the metal shielding. Be gentle with this as the shielding as it is very thin and bending it could possibly cause the shielding to short out something on the motherboard when the PS3 is reassembled.

Your PS3 is now disassembled !!!

How to add 1080p Bluray movies to your PS3!
first of all You'll need a USB that can hold at least 6GB.......

PART I (Changing your USB format):
Note: Make a backup of your USB or external because the files will be deleted
1) Get your USB flash drive (or external!) and plug it in your computer!
2) Go to START --> RUN --> and then type in "diskmgmt.msc" (WITHOUT THE QUOTES) and then press enter
3) Disk Management should come up.
6) Make sure the drive type is BASIC, if not, then it may not work, I am unsure.
7) Press your M: drive in the Disk Management window.
FOLLOW MY DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY HERE, OR YOU MAY MESS UP YOUR COMPUTER
8) On the bottom, where you see the words "Healthy" the drive letters, and such.
9) LOOK for your M: drive in the window. There should be a blue line through it (and it should probably be just one long box, not 3 boxes as opposed to C
10) Right-click it and press Delete Partition.
11) Now click on it AGAIN and press New Partition.
12) Press next. Select Primary Partition and press next. Enter max size and press next.
13) Click on Assign the following drive letter and then choose drive letter M. Click next.
14) Select do not format this partition and press next.
15) Press finish.
16) Now download the following:
Code:

Extract it to EXACTLY C:/ (The root of your C drive)

17) Press START --> RUN --> type in "cmd" (without quotes) and press enter
18) Type in "CD /D c:" in the black window that appeared (again, without quotes)
19) Then type in "fat32format m:" (without quotes)
20) It should be successful in less than a second.
21) Plug it in the PS3 and see if the PS3 detects it.
22) If so, CONGRATZ! You now have a fat32 usb/external which you can put in your ps3!

PART II (CONVERSION):
1) Download your 1080p bluray movie (try to get the movies that are compressed to around 10gb, cause you don't want a 55gb movie on your ps3)
NOTE: Make sure the movie will come out as .mkv or else it will not work
2) Download mkv2vob (search it on Google, version 2.2.4)
3) This one is obvious, extract the movie you downloaded. (Usually, it'll come out with another bunch of .rar files so you'll have to extract again right after)
4) Install and Open mkv2vob
5) Go to the Configuration tab and change the following:
a) Video Transcoding: Automatic
b) Output File Extension: avi
c) File Splitting: fat32 (4gb)
6) Go back to the "ADD FILE" tab and press Choose from the Source File.
7) Add in the .mkv file.
8) Press Choose from the Destination Directory and choose wherever you want the file to end up at (it will end up in splits, will explain later)
9) Press Add File and wait. It may take a while depending on how big the file is and how good your computer is.
10) A few windows will pop up now and then, DO NOT TOUCH THEM. I also highly advise you do not go on the internet or do something that costs a lot of RAM or you may mess up your video
11) When it is done, you should end up with 3-4 .avi files split into 4GB each. The reason for this is because FAT32 formatted drives can only hold 4GB no matter how much it CLAIMS it can hold. And the PS3 can only read FAT32 drives. So Sony got smart with us, but we can still beat them

PART III (Adding files to the PS3):
1) With your USB drive/external connected to your computer. Make 2 folders, music and video.
2) Inside video, drag and drop ONE of the newly created .avi files.
3) When it is done copying, unplug your USB/external and put it into the PS3.
4) Turn on the PS3 and go to the video column. Your USB/external should show up there with the name
5) Press TRIANGLE on the USB/external, and press Display All.
6) Search for your .avi file and press copy.
7) Delete the .avi file from the USB/External.
8) Go back to the computer and repeat the process until all your files are inside the PS3.

Voila!
(Make sure you also have a HDTV or else it won't look that nice)

it took me a few attempts to work this out but it does work

audio converter of ur choice!

and its so easy to do!
1. extract the audio from ur mkv using mkvextract.
2. run ur mkv file thru gotsent, and wait for ur output file.
3. convert ur audio using ur favorite audio converter, be it AC3 or DTS, to AAC LC
**or** if ur mkv already has AAC audio, go to step 4
4. open YAMB and add the mp4 file u got from GotSent, and unselect the 2 channel audio, then add the 6 channel aac u made from ur ac3 or dts file.
4. hit go and wait.

u should now have a fully working MP4 file with aac 5.1 audio.

i am still looking for a good DTS or AC3 to AAC converter, the movies i had already had AAC audio so they worked a treat!

here are the MediaInfo files from the original MKV file and the created MP4 file.

F.A.Q's

1. ok fat boy, i've followed the tutorial to the lewtter, and i've got a nice .mp4 file but my lovely surround sound system doesnt give me any audio, but it does work thru my tv, whats going on?
A. this was my only snag of this whole thing, SOME surround sound systems (like my own, d'oh) DO NOT support AAC 5.1 play-back, ur tv should chuck it out as 2.0 stereo, and it will sound great, but u woung get 5.1, if u r getting NO SOUND at all, go to [SETTINGS] the down to [SOUND SETTINGS] and whatever output type u r using make sure u uncheck the AAC box, that way it will just pump it out as stereo! its the only flaw in my master plan to take over the video conversion world!

2. why not just split the .mkv file and then use H264info to drop the video level from 5.1 to 4.1 and that would mean u didnt have to use GotSent.
A. i HAVE tried this and for some reason it didnt work, the finished mp4 was playable but the video was all messed up, where it was ment to be black it was white, but NOT in negitive, the colours were all right. i dunno why but i have only got it to work using GotSent, it does something to the video in the mkv so it is perfect for a mp4.
