XP increases quickly on the higher difficulties, bonuses for completing a wave without taking damage or the crystal taking damage offer large XP bonuses on Insane difficulty. Also you can build your defenses on a stronger character and switch to a lower level one during the game to get XP faster, i would say building strong defenses then switching to a weaker character would be easier than trying to do it on insane mode.
Tips: Always try and keep the crystal perimeter surrounded with things that can protect it, such as Magic Towers, Fire Towers. Also make sure to put blockades around it so the enemies can't get to the crystal right away, this will give you time to kill the enemy without having to worry about harm on the crystal. The enemies with the bow can shoot the crystal from a distance, so try to take them out first over smaller enemies.
