Steam security updates coming next week with longer trade holds

4.6
Starting next week, Valve will be implementing new security measure to prevent account and user item theft.

The team will extend the hold on Steam item trades to 15 days and listings on the Steam Community Market will have a hold of 15 days before an item can be sold.

Those trading with long-time Steam friends should not the hold duration will remain at the one day period.

Steam users who are already protected by the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator will not be impacted – or if they add the security feature today.

Also, Steam Support will no longer restore items that have left accounts following a successful trade or market transaction. The reason for this, is the process previously created duplicates of original items.

Valve will implement the new security measures next week on March 9. You can read over the announcement on Steam, which explains things more fully.

The Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator introduced in December, and Valve estimates that 95% of daily trades use the mobile authenticator.

The company said at the time of the authenticator’s released there were around “77,000 accounts hijacked and pillaged each month.”

I never liked this idea in the first place, It's just to much of a hassle for trading and when you buy stuff from the market you need to wait forever before doing anything with the item.

TaigaAisaka This is rather annoying to be honest. I tend to raise my Steam level quite often and I always get these extra backgrounds and emoticons that I would rather just throw on the market place so they don't suck up my inventory. Plus with all the CSGO unboxings I do. 7 days was tolerable, 15 days, is a little too much in my opinion. As much as I hate using my phone for anything regarding security, I guess I'm slapping the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator on so this isn't a concern to me.

Steam Guard is extremely helpful, so I'm not sure why you'd avoid it. It just provides you with codes to authorize things.

I'm sure as hell glad they fixed the duplication exploit, that would have ruined the economy for high tier skins.

_Skittle I have the Mobile Authenticator but my trades still seem to be held, not sure why :/

They'll be held for 7 days, however with the Mobile Authenticator, you won't be hit with the 15 day wait. Everyone who isn't using the Mobile Authenticator, will have the 15 day wait, which is far too long in my opinion.
