Today was that wonderful day that we call NPD day, where research firm the NPD Group released data concerning the industry we hold so near and dear. And following May’s pretty disappointing results, Microsoft was quick to issue a positive statement claiming “unprecedented demand” for the company’s new $299 slim, sexy, and sleek Xbox 360 it released half way into June.

“…we are hearing great feedback from retailers that the new Xbox 360 250GB is experiencing unprecedented demand,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in a report.

Additionally, Microsoft says the demand for its hardware since the $50 price reductions on all existing models went in effect, has helped move units.

“Strong demand for the new Xbox 360 250GB combined with a $50 price reduction in the U.S. on the Xbox 360 Arcade and Elite consoles, now US$149.99 and US$249.99 respectively, has resulted in a significant sales spike for Xbox 360 since the new console hit shelves on or around June 14,” the company said.

As a caveat, the above claim is based on Microsoft’s internal data, and not anything official from NPD.

Has anyone out there purchased a new Xbox 360 Slim? I want one dearly, but cannot justify shelling out $300 when I have a perfectly operable system. That said, I’ve been letting my cat sit on my Xbox while I game. So if the thing overheats I’ll be forced to buy a new one.
