Microsoft Exec: The Power of the Cloud Will Exceed Expectations

4.5
When Microsoft announced the Xbox One back in 2013, it touted something extra that all console owners will receive. The power of the cloud that will make the console more powerful than it already is. As the name indicates, the Xbox One’s underlying architecture is used to communicate with a remote server that carries out complex computations such as in-game physics and destruction and sends the result back to the console. In short, the in-game effects are no longer confined to the console’s in built architecture.

Players were optimistic regarding what this technology could bring in for Xbox One but Microsoft had no practical demonstration other than a short demo that was released in 2014. But during last month’s Gamescom, Microsoft finally showcased Crackdown 3, a cloud based title offloads complex destruction simulation to a remote server resulting into effects which a modern, high-end PC will struggle to render.

GamingBolt spoke to Xbox boss of India, Anshu Mor and asked him about his thoughts on the cloud and how it can set new trends for multiplayer gaming.

“I think the cloud will play a phenomenal role as we go forward. We as a company believe in the power of the cloud,” Anshu said to GamingBolt. “Even if you look back, we have always maintained that there is this power that the box brings in which is huge value to the consumer and then there is the power of the cloud that will match or exceed the expectations that can be delivered on the box. Crackdown 3 is one of the early experiences of that which we are going to give you.”

But given that this feature is dependent on the quality of ISP infrastructure, will the service be inconsistent in countries that are outside UK and USA?

“It remains to be seen in all transparency. There are people who have decent bandwidth connections so I would imagine a 2 Mbps plus connection would still continue to work. You know, these things are connected to the ISP so I cannot comment on that. I don’t believe that the experiences will be compromised in the current set of consumers we have.”

Crackdown 3 comes out on the Xbox One in 2016. We will see how the cloud will make the game better in the coming months. Stay tuned for our full interview with Anshu Mor soon.

Only reason we need cloud is because you only gave us little space.

I like this as the hardware won't need to be as extreme and expensive but can still have good graphics.

Lenny_Face I hope this is more useful than the Xbox 360 cloud, never touched the Xbox 360 cloud.

That "cloud" was used for storage, this new "cloud" will be used for server side computations so your console can focus on other stuff, making the game run faster, smoother, etc.

F4VRE I believe it. Major Nelson who is a very reliable and trustworthy community head for Xbox has said they will be ready for 4k when the time comes. The Cloud is really one of the huge draws to the Xbox One.

I highly doubt there will be any games in 4k this console generation. Cloud or no cloud that would be a massive stretch.

There is no way either current gen console will push 4k. They can barely perform at 1080p 60fps, 4k will not happen except for MAYBE some 2d side scrollers.

Guess we'll see in the near future if MS puts their money where there mouth is. I can see the cloud being a real great tool when the next console comes around and bandwidth for most everyone will be better too.

i thought they were just talking about 4k videos, like movies from netflix or youtube ect. not actual games in 4k
