Don't Hold Your Breath for Backwards Compatibility on PS4

4.5
During E3 2015, one of Microsoft's biggest 'wow' moments came when it announced that the Xbox One would be gaining the ability to play Xbox 360 titles via a backwards compatibility service. It was a move that had the crowd clapping furiously, and as you'd expect, there's been a big call from PlayStation fans that they want something similar on the PlayStation 4.

"I was very surprised. It must have taken lots of effort for them to realise the backwards compatibility, because the Xbox 360 and Xbox One use very different kinds of architecture," Sony's Shuhei Yoshida said on the matter in an interview with EDGE. "They showed a very short list of titles that work, and doing software emulation means you have to work title by title. So I'm curious to see what kind of games will be included in those 100 games that they say will be compatible by the end of the year," he continued, sounding somewhat sceptical.

Yoshida remained sceptical when asked about the possibility of backwards compatibility on the PS4, however. "I totally understand people asking for it, and if it was easy, we'd have done that," he replied, adding: "But our focus is creating PS4 games and adding new services." Perhaps disappointing news for those of you holding out for some hope. "Remaking games on PS4 makes the games even better – with The Last Of Us, you can play at 60 frames per second, and the same goes for Dark Souls 2. Actually, I just finished Dark Souls 2 again on PS4," Yoshida concluded, belting out a quote that's bound to have people in an uproar about remasters.

Backwards compatibility seems to be a debate that never quite goes away, but where do you stand? Would you make use of your old PS3 games on your PS4, or do you prefer having older titles remastered for your new-gen hardware? Try not to be too controversial in the comments section below.

Nujabes Doesn't matter much to me. This is the "next gen". I don't care to play rehashed games again that were on the consoles before. We have playstation now either way, which is a form of backwards compatibility.

In which you have to pay for right? On the Xbox I am pretty sure you don't have to play a game you already own. The whole reason they are focusing on remastering games for the ps4 is because thats a whole nother $60 bucks per customer. Of course they don't want to miss out on that. Making people pay again for a game they own already.

Doesn't matter to me if I have to pay for it, I make money. People just have different preferences, if you want free old games. Go to the xbox one. I'm enjoying my time on the playstation. I own an xbox one, I just don't personally like it and because of that I don't play it.

(I own neither system. This is a non bias look on it)

Good for you. YOu get money. So do a large majority of the people that play video games. The issue isn't about money.
It's a lack of features.
The PS4 is the top system right now, and it is a joke.
The online service is crap. Their top features are not that marketable. Cool they have a slight graphical advantage over Xbox One.
But the Xbox One has WAY more features. Backwards compatibility is a big blow to PS4.
That feature alone will boost Xbox One. The simple fact that you can have a FULLY FLEDGED Xbox 360 and One in a single system is huge.
We don't want remasters. We shouldn't have to get the game again.
Next Gen should have backwards compatibility. Else wise you just cripple the system.
Sony can't even figure out how to do it. They can't get their shit together.

the online service isnt that bad compared to xbox one. Theyre both down the same amount of times.

no suprise here, ps will always be a step down, went from a ps4 to an xbox one and glad i did, my brother now gets to have the shitty ps4

If the developers would remake games, then that would be better than backwards compatibility but as most of them wouldn't be willing, it is great that backwards compatibility is a thing

I prefer re-masters over backwards compatibility.

Finally an unbiased and understandable post. I do own both next ten consoles, and agree completely. Xbox does have more features, and for some people it might not matter but it still makes the Xbox One the better console. PS4 has terrible servers. God, GTA V Online lags on PS4 a little, and Xbox One it does not. (I have the top speed from my provider plus, a Nighthawk router, I work at best buy so I do know a little bit about networking and I get discounts so I buy the best I can afford, so don't say it is my internet).

Plus PS4 doesn't even support the 5GHz band. LIKE WHAT? This shit is the newest in networking and they didn't even find the network card to support it? Don't say I should be wired, man this is 2015 and the world is becoming wireless. So the fact that they didn't even support the newest band is a disappointment.

I have both consoles. I play PS4 Online more tbh (only because more of my friends have PS4 because they were dumb and thought "Oh more 1080p games means it is better" false.

Ugh. Sorry for the rant, I have always tried to be respectful to both console owners, but damn, some people need to see the truth.

If you truly care for a next gen experience you should get a PC, games will always be playable since you aren't locked to a console.

At the start X1 was behind and PS4 was leading but since backwards compatability was announced alot of people seem to be moving to Xbox, i done the opposite haha
