PlayStation won’t be following Xbox with backwards compatibility

4.6
Head of PlayStation Europe, Jim Ryan, says PlayStation has no intention of following suit with backwards compatibility and here’s why.

Talking to MCV about the Xbox announcement, he said “It is an entirely legitimate approach, and if you are seeking to upgrade 360 owners to Xbox One, it is a very logical approach to take.”

Ryan commented that the Xbox announcement wasn’t very clear on how the feature would work, adding ” I suspect there might be a few twists in that particular tale. But we will see”.

He confirmed that Sony would be investing in software updates like SharePlay, Play as you Download, and Suspend/ Resume features.

“Unfortunately there are just not sufficent enough software engineers in the world for everyone to do everything. Each platform holder has to make their choices, we made one and they made another. Their choice is entirely legitimate, and I think our choice is legitimate, too. In some ways it is quite nice to have points of difference between the two platforms, and people will decide which approach suits them best.”

Addressing the backwards compatibility feature of consoles, Ryan said “We have experience of backwards compatibility. The earliest PS3 model was backwards compatible with PS2, and it is a much requested feature… but actually it’s not so greatly used.

“On balance, we are happy with our approach and we don’t wish to be defensive about it at all. But as I say, both approaches are legitimate.”

Are you disappointed this feature won’t be a part of PS4? Will you use it on your Xbox One? Let us know in the comments.

Meanwhile on PC, every game still works!

This will really effect the PS community badly, backwards compatibility is a massive thing and Sony will lose a lot of interest on this!

I am disappointed that I can't play my PS3 games on my PS4 (albeit a limited library of games lol), but I still love my PS4 and One equally. I was able to play Zuma (a 360 arcade game) on my One yesterday, as I am in the preview program. It really does work, all I had to do was download it on my One. Glad that they took the time to create and implement this emulator!

I think that Playstation should follow...

I'm kind of disappointed about the no backwards compatibility thing. I mean, I don't have any games from PS3 but it still would have been cool to be able to go buy some for dirt cheap. I wonder if later down the road Sony will change their minds about it all like Microsoft with the "DRM" dispute when the One was first announced.

The twist is that games need to be given the "okay" from publishers/developers before it can be put it can be put on the compatibility list. I think some might say no so they can do a remake, though I hope not. I'm still confident about this though.

Yea and how many ppl still have working ps3's that are backwards compatible? Exactly they had major problems! My friend purchased one at release it stuffed up in the first 8 months and don't wouldn't repair it, instead they replaced it with a normal ps3, as they claimed they didn't have the parts to fix it as those were very limited stock. Plenty of experience hey sony
