Microsoft Unlocks More Xbox One CPU Power For Developers

4.6
According to reports coming from leaked documents outlining the Xbox One’s latest upgrades and newest development tools, Microsoft has allegedly opened up a seventh CPU core to developers, offering game makers a boost in processing power.

The news follows the trend Microsoft set in motion earlier last year when the company began freeing up resources normally reserved for background tasks, like Kinect camera functions, to instead serve the console’s performance in displaying better game visuals.

Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry reports that, since October, Microsoft has given developer access to 50% to 80% of a seventh processing core. Previously, both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 reserved two of eight processing cores strictly for multi-tasking, background tasks, and each console’s operating system.

However, providing game makers on Xbox One with six and a half or more cores of CPU power doesn’t come without its own headaches. While games might certainly benefit from the added performance, as titles like Assassin’s Creed Unity and Grand Theft Auto 5 are believed to already have done so, the possibility of game-specific and console-related voice commands eating up 50% or more of that seventh core’s usage still a reality.

Essentially, developers can’t access its full potential if space is still needed to perform voice-activated tasks at a moments notice. That said, reports indicate that Microsoft is on course to address the issue in a future SDK update.

With the size of the Xbox One, I bought a blank case, completely blank, nothing on it states Xbox One, and I had my friend as his edging shop carve "VCR 1" onto it, looks so amazing, but with it's size, it looks like an old VCR xD

Colombia Xbox One you suck 360 is better then you retire please!!!

BTW XBONE maybe smart, but they can't read...

They are better than the 360, they are... But the cost doesn't justify the performance it gives.

The cost? A mere $350? I can only speak for myself, but I'm pretty pleased with that price considering all consoles (generation speaking) last at least 6+ years.

I don't think that the price really matches the consoles they provide, $350 is alot of money, and it's a box of plastic pretty much, and if they could make it to where it can never or very not likely to get rrod or whatever Xbone has now, i would buy it.

I haven't had any issues with my One yet. But I rarely play it considering there aren't any really games out. I don't think consoles are made to be played round the clock either so that's not really their fault if that happens.

the 360 was 350+ when it first came out so y people moan about the price xbox one is beyond me

yeah 350$ is pretty cheap its 2014 what are you looking for a 150$ console? not going to happen anymore hell the ps3 was 600$ or 500$ at launch i forget 20gb no wifi so 350-400 for a xb1 is a outstanding price 360 is a outdated windows 95 pc sorry to say.

It's because of the amount of money it costs to make the console. I'm not sure how much the Xbox One costs to make but for the performance it gives it shouldn't be far off. I know that when first released, the PS4 cost $18 more to make than it sells for ($399ish). But now the cost difference will be higher.
