Nintendo is working on its next console, says Miyamoto

Nintendo's internal teams are hard at work on Nintendo's next games console, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has said.

In an interview with AP, the designer said that while the firm remains very much committed to developing games for Wii U, it also has teams working up idea for the company's next major hardware offering.

"We're focused on providing a robust line-up of Wii U software for next year. It seems like we've managed to do that this year and people are very happy with what we've done on Wii U," he said.

"For the time being, our focus is on the Wii U hardware, but Nintendo as a whole has groups working on ideas for new hardware systems. While we're busy working on software for the Wii U, we have production lines that are working on ideas for what the next system might be," he went on to confirm.

This doesn't come as a surprise since it's typical for platform holders to begin work on their next machine soon after their last hardware launch, but this does come a the first official acknowledgment of Nintendo's work on a new console.

Miyamoto also spoke briefly of the key role Mario typically plays in showing off the evolution of Nintendo's new hardware. "With each digital evolution, he was there to usher in the next era. I think that maybe when we release the next hardware system, you can look forward to seeing Mario take on a new role or in a new game," he said.

Nintendo highlighted encouraging Wii U sales growth in October as it posted improved financial results for the first half of its business year.

The company said Wii U sales have been on an upward curve since Mario Kart 8's release in May. Nintendo sold 610,000 Wii U consoles in its most recent quarter, for a total of 1.12 million in the April-September period, taking lifetime Wii U sales to 7.29 million units since launching in November 2012.

gtapro151 finally they relize they need more power now they can release somthing bettr then ps4/xb1 that would be smart

Because they could just do that out of air -.-

They really could..The power of the PS4/XB1 isn't all the different, really. They just have higher grade gear in the console. It would be easy to outstrip them, it'd just be expensive. Any PC costing an equivilance to the current gen consoles can match if not beat them already..It's all about hardware, which is always progressing.

The thing that makes Nintendo different from Sony or Microsoft is while Sony and Microsoft keep making their consoles the same (aside from a few new features, better hardware, etc.), Nintendo is trying to be more innovative.

Also, as Stonerzard said, Nintendo isn't trying for the hardcore playing. They aim for a broader demographic and a casual game style.

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with Xbox or PlayStation, but Nintendo likes to take risks and I hope to see that it pays off in the end.

Inq I stopped buying Nintendo products when the Wii U was released. I don't think I will ever buy another product unless they step up.

Did you actually play it though? Because there are millions of people just saying that it's bad, when they've never even played it before - which is like saying you're the best at something you've never tried.

Sage Lets hope this goes better than the Wii cause i personally hate the wii

What did you hate about it though? If people said why rather than just the fact of them disliking something, then maybe there would be some changes.

I don't think Nintendo's idea of gaming is hardcore, sit in a dark room, swearing at anybody who does better than you. I think that Nintendo develop their games for a more casual and fun side, compared to the competitive and gritty side. Other consoles go into more detail, it's all just about preference.
