Limbo has launched on Xbox One as a free download for early console adopters.

A Microsoft spokesperson told CVG that the game will also go on general release in the near future.

"We're looking forward to launching Limbo on Xbox One," they said. "As a thank you to our earliest adopters, fans who played their Xbox One the first weekend of launch received early, free access to the game. Limbo will also be available for purchase via the Xbox Game Store soon."

In October, the Korean Game Rating Board classified the critically acclaimed puzzle platformer for release on Xbox One, although this serves as the first official confirmation that it will be released on Microsoft's new-gen console.

Limbo sees players take control of a small boy seeking his missing sister in a dark and deadly 2D world filled with physics-based puzzles and obstacles.

It debuted on Xbox 360 in July 2010 and remained exclusive to the console until it arrived on PS3 a year later, before making its way to PC, Mac and Vita. Limbo sales had already surpassed three million copies before the game launched on iOS devices in July 2013.

It was announced at E3 in June that PlayDead's Limbo follow-up, Inside, will be released first on Xbox One in "early 2015".
