PSN down after suffering DDOS attack

Sony isn't expected to begin maintenance on the PlayStation Network until tomorrow, but PlayStation users were surprised to wake up and find that the online service is already down.

Upon trying to login to PSN, users are greeted with error code "NW-31456-9," which reads "Cannot connect to the server within the time limit."

I got the error code: "NW-31201-7," which simply reads "Cannot connect to the server."

Apparently, it is the result of a DDOS attack by a hacking group known as Lizard Squad. The group admitted to the attack, but didn't really give a reason other than the usual "Sony is a greedy corporation" excuse.

The official Sony PlayStation hasn't confirmed if this is the case, but Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley acknowledged the "large scale DDOS," adding that "it's almost under control now."

Wonder why this was added to the news section because you're just gonna cause flaming. "Emergerd, xbox is the best in the werld." Xbox has nothing to do with the story.

Maybe the should be putting more of their profits into security. Welp guess psn will be out another 3 months. Lul.

Kinda annoying, I mean it's great that they are calling them out for being greedy, but the people that are most affected by this sort of thing are the users and we are the ones getting our accounts hacked too.

Anyone saying this is hard to mitigate is an idiot. The reason Lizard are doing this is because they are exposing large companies using little of their profit to protect their security and infrastructure. One of the largest networks should be able to mitigate any size DDoS within 3 hours.
