World of Warcraft dips to 6.8 million subscribers

World of Warcraft subscriber numbers have dropped to around 6.8 million, Blizzard has announced.

Still the "number 1 subscription-based MMORPG", as Blizzard points out, its user base is down from the 7.7 million subscribers clocked by the end of the second calendar quarter of 2013.

Despite this, Blizzard president and co-founder Mike Morhaime says the MMO "remains healthy", and that declines were to be expected as the last expansion, 2012's Mists of Pandaria, reaches the "end of its life cycle".

"As expected, we did see a decline in subscribers, which mostly came out of the East. This pattern is right in line, percentage wise, with the drop that we saw at the end of Cataclysm's cycle in Q2 2012," said Morhaime. "That drop in 2012 was followed by an uptake in subscribers just ahead of Myst of Pandaria's launch.

"We're hoping to see players return once we draw closer to the release of Warlords of Draenor later this year," he added.

Warlords of Draenor is the next major WoW expansion, and will explore the franchise's history across the new continent of Draenor. It will also increase World of Warcraft's level cap to 100 and offer players the option to immediately boost one new or existing character to level 90.

The expansion will also introduce visual upgrades that'll increase the polygon counts of some player models more than fivefold, Blizzard confirmed earlier this year.

Blizzard says the expansion is expected to release on or before December 20, 2014.

Maleovent This game has turned into complete crap, and I won't be subscribing back for Warlords.

With every expansion Blizzard tries new things, sometimes they fail and other times they succeed. A few aspects of MoP was a bad idea, but there was also good ones. People who think of this game to be worst than it previously was needs to take off their nostalgia blinds. I doubt anyone who would go back to how WoW was back in vanilla will find much enjoyment out of it.

The raids are still the same degree of difficulty, and will be getting even harder in WoD(Ever try Heroic Siegecrafter? lol). With every update of the game classes are getting more and more balanced in PvP, unlike how it was in vanilla when enhancement shamans could 1 shot everyone. The lore is still as great as it ever was.

I personally still enjoy WoW and all the new content that gets added in regularly. WoD seems like it will be even better than MoP, and I can't wait to play it.

NBC I don't really get why people are canceling. I am super busy and don't play it much, but I still keep my subscription and hop on from time to time.

The economy man, it's hitting us all hard.

SHS Currently on WoW everyone is just waiting for Warlords. There isnt much to do but gear in SoO and PVP so people probably bored.

That's exactly why people cancel their subscriptions. Who wants to pay to not even really play?

Never played World of Warcraft....Do blizzard need me to help them out?

i guess what they really need to get there bum in gear for is merging those realms, its too slow the pace they are going and granted it may seem over populated in some connected realms/virtual realms upon the new content but it will slowly die down to a nice even amount through the lifespan of expansions and patch releases etc.
