Mojang is thinking about custom servers for Minecraft Xbox One

4.7
Mojang is thinking about adding support for player-owned, customisable servers to Minecraft Xbox One, the developer's Daniel Kaplan has told OXM. This would allow players to set up their own online worlds, which invited players could then explore in their absence. The developer says it has yet to put any concrete plans in motion, however.

"On the Xbox servers?" Kaplan began, "We are looking into different solutions, however we don't know when it will work. A lot of people would enjoy that and we have got a lot of questions about it. It would be similar to what we're doing on the PC."

It's possible that the game will allow players to store their worlds on Microsoft's Azure servers (aka, the Xbox Live cloud), but there are obvious difficulties. Minecraft save files soak up more and more storage space as players explore and more terrain is generated - supporting such growth remotely would presumably be a challenge, with thousands of players involved.

If Mojang itself were to offer the servers, there's also the question of how this would sit alongside an Xbox Gold subscription. The developer's Minecraft Realms service is available for a monthly fee. Still, remote world storage remains one of our most-wanted features for the game, which will go on sale this month. If you had a server of your very own, what would you do with it?

I think it would be awesome if they added custom servers for Minecraft on the Xbox One, I really hope they do. I am curious to see if Xbox One gets this will PS4 also get this.

It's a great idea, know one could really deny that, however in my opinion it isn't really plausible... at least not at a decent price. They would have to constantly be adding server space as more and more people created their servers and as each server got bigger. If they support multiple saves (or multiple servers) the strain would only grow. The only way I could see this working without either slowing down all of Xbox Live (if they indeed store it on the cloud) would be a monthly price per server/world and have to expand the amount of server space per individual. Adding space though, I would imagine, isn't very easy to do and the data would have to update along with xbox updates.
