Sony agrees to $15 million settlement over 2011 PSN data breach

Sony Computer Entertainment America has agreed to give $15 million worth of digital content to those affected by the PlayStation Network data breach in 2011.

Sony admitted in April 2011 that the PSN had been hacked and user details compromised.

The security breach resulted in around three weeks of network downtime. Sony subsequently offered a Welcome Back package in which players could receive two free PS3 games, two free PSP games and a period of free PlayStation Plus membership.

However, some felt this wasn't enough and a North American class action lawsuit was filed against the platform holder. Three years later, Polygon reports that Sony has reached a settlement in which a further $15 million of free content will be offered to PlayStation owners.

The settlement has yet to be approved by a judge but if it is the content will be distributed in the following way:

Those who had a PSN account in 2011 and did not claim the Welcome Back pack will be able to choose two of the following options: one PS3 or PSP game from a choice of fourteen, three PS3 themes from a choice of six, three months subscription to PS Plus.

They will also be able to choose the same option twice: for example, two free games or two three-month PS Plus subscriptions. This will continue until Sony has given out $6 million of content.

Those who did claim the Welcome Back pack will be able to choose one of the above options.

In addition, anyone who had a Qriocity account at the time is eligible to a free month of Music Unlimited, while customers of SOE games are entitled to $4.50 of free Station Cash.

Well, they had to pay them back somehow.

This is honestly extremely nice for Sony, pretty sure Microsoft wouldn't have done the same in the same situation.

I thought free games and membership would be enough, peoples must take gaming too seriously or must be never off the console to think differently.

Polygon Two free games or two three-month Ps Plus subs...
Hmmm, I'd probably go with the PS PLus since you get games...

Pretty decent of Sony to do this - wouldn't see this happen if it was Microsoft.

you wouldn't see it happen because Microsoft wouldn't get hacked

It shows a lot of character on Sony's part to do this for their customers and what not.

99th If your account is older than the 2011 breach ie. you had your account before the downtime, you're eligible?

Yes I believe so, because that would have been before the breach, which to me seems like you are eligible
