Titanfall PC’s 48GB install size explained by Respawn

4.8
Titanfall requires a 48GB installation on PC, and developer Respawn Entertainment has now explained the install size.

The Xbox One edition only requires a 17GB install, but it still takes bloody ages. My copy’s installing as I write this.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Respawn’s lead engineer Richard Baker explained that 35GB of that total install size is to do with uncompressed audio.

The idea is that by having uncompressed audio, PCs will have to spend less CPU power on decoding audio, thereby ensuring a slicker experience.

“We have audio we either download or install from the disc, then we uncompress it,” he told the site. “We probably could have had audio decompress off disc but we were a little worried about min spec and the fact that a two-core machine would dedicate a huge chunk of one core to just decompressing audio.

“So… it’s almost all audio… On a higher PC it wouldn’t be an issue. On a medium or moderate PC, it wouldn’t be an issue, it’s that on a two-core [machine] with where our min spec is, we couldn’t dedicate those resources to audio.”

What do you make of the above?

Titanfall hits Europe March 14.

48GB install size is pretty big, if you was to install like 20 more games with this size you could be outta space if you have a 1TB Hard drive.

Oasis These are the risks of pc gaming, always have been. You never know how it'll run until it's in your very own machine.

That and many other issues, I remember gaming on a custom build from this trusted website, and the graphics card went a week later.

They should add an install option because I have a 6 core processor, I could dedicate 2 cores and still not experience an fps hit. Stupid that I have to waste space on uncompressed audio..

I have no idea what I just read but, I'm glad the Xbox version is a bit smaller in size compared to the PC version. Although it'll probably look 100 times better on PC.

I can only assume they let the Xbox One use compressed audio because it has a discrete DSP (this is guaranteed as hardware does not vary from machine to machine with consoles), which handles audio without hogging the limited CPU. If Titanfall released on PS4, the audio would be handled by AMD's Trueaudio DSP on the GPU, which will also be available for the new line of AMD cards for PCs.

I think they should let us install the uncompressed audio after the compressed audio installation is complete if we think it will give us better performance. Cut the load on Origin's servers in half and give us more flexibility.

That's a huge install, might get it for console though.

That's stupid.. Should've at least given the option for people who have decent machines to compress the audio to save space...

This is a lot of hard disk space. I'm still considering getting it, not made my mind yet. General computer tasks will be slower if more hardware is used, right?

48gb is still a lot, I will not get this game though for the PC or the console.
