US 3DS sales have surpassed 11.5 million units, Nintendo claims.

The company said on Friday that the latest lifetime hardware sales figure is for the entire 3DS family of portable systems, which also includes 3DS XL and 2DS.

The new 3DS sales total is up from 10.5 million units reported in mid-December.

More than 16 million combined packaged and digital 3DS games were sold in 2013, an increase of more than 45 per cent over 2012's total, according to Nintendo of America.

"Nintendo 3DS is a powerhouse with games and experiences that appeal to all kinds of players," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing.

"We're not slowing down in 2014. With more games featuring fan-favorite franchises on the way, the best days of Nintendo 3DS are still to come."

Lifetime UK sales of 3DS, 3DS XL and the new 2DS combined topped two million units in December. The handheld device was also the best-selling game system of 2013.

-Signed I bet everyone is waiting for Smash Bros to be released.

Lol probably, I know I would be.

I'm waiting for that to be released on the Wii U and then I will buy that game and the console. I'm only planning on getting the 3DS for Pokemon X and whatever other Pokemon games come out for it.

ExTCW I see a lot of people in my town with these... They're not hyped in the least bit, and I personally wouldn't get one but I'm surprised.

I think the 3D feature is pretty cool. It drains the battery though.

While the 3D is cool and all it usually hurts my eyes a fair bit and causes frames to drop significantly, so i try to steer away from turning it on

Really? I know a few people with them: also our area is pretty urban.

I'm honestly not too surprised at this. It is the top handheld console on the market and has been selling very well for the past year or so
