App Store sales topped $10 billion across 2013

The App Store made $10 billion in sales last year, with December alone providing over $1 billion and a record-breaking amount of app downloads. iOS users racked up "almost" 3 billion downloads last month, helping to take App Store developers' earnings to date up to a whopping $15 billion.

Given that earnings figure was around the $7 billion mark at the end of 2012, that would suggest Apple Senior VP Eddy Cue isn't exaggerating when he calls 2013 "the best year ever for the App Store." As for what kind of apps are taking the most advantage of that success, it's games, games, and more games.

As we learned last month, Candy Crush Saga was the most downloaded free app of 2013, while Minecraft: Pocket Edition was the year's best-selling paid app. Revealingly, Candy Crush Saga was the sweetest of all for gross revenue, with Minecraft: Pocket Edition down (relatively) in 11th.

Its crazy how successful their app store is compaired to other OS's. I see thew huge trend towards games in apps like Temple Run, Cut the Rope, and now flappy birds. Almost all of them started off on the Apple store and because of their success they moved to other markets.

Apple sure does a good job with its overall sales. But from all the thousands upon thousand of things to buy on the store, it's inevitable to come across those billions of dollars.

It's because the simplest types of games are the most addicting. Look at Cookie clicker after all.

As to be expected. Apps are one of the main reasons that someone would buy an IoS device


Yeah but i never expect them to get this much since lots of people have jailbreak and get there stuff free.
