Xbox One coined as ‘disc-less’ console for some time, Spencer reveals

4.6
Xbox One was originally conceived as a digital-only console, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer has revealed. It wasn’t until relatively recently that the optical drive was finalised.

Speaking with OXM, Spencer revealed that the notion of a disc-less Xbox One console was on the table until the middle of last year, but was subsequently dropped following Microsoft’s reveal.

He added, “Obviously, after the announcement and E3, there was some feedback about what people wanted to change. There was a real discussion about whether we should have an optical disc drive in Xbox One or if we could get away with a purely disc-less console, but when you start looking at bandwidth and game size, it does create issues.

“So we decided – which I think was the right decision – to go with the Blu-ray drive and give the people an easy way to install a lot of content. From some of those original thoughts, you saw a lot of us really focusing on the digital ecosystem you see on other devices – thinking of and building around that.”

Do you agree that discs are still the way to go for now, or would you like to see a purely digital machine at some point? Let us know below.

This would have ruined the Xbox even more than it is right now.

Thank god they made it take discs

That would be a disaster if that happened.
Look at the PSP go, that failed because there was no disk slot. I think sony learned from their mistakes.

Quite happy this didn't happen imagine how long games would take to download for people with slow internet ? Or what if the consoles broke just isn't a good idea at all if you ask me . Also the digital games cost a lot more atleast with the disc you have options to trade in etc

Disc's are the way to go for now. but if they give price drops to digital games. Giving people a reason to buy the digital copy instead of the physical game.

Close shave. That would have been a terrible mistake.

daRealRush I am surely happy that they didn't go with a disc-less or digital only console! Because, the internet people has these days, isn't that great. So, it would take days and days for someone to download one game!

I was just about to say the same
