Activision threatens subscription fees for Call of Duty

3.9
In a recent conference call with investors, Activision Blizzard revealed a new Call of Duty, announced that a subscription for the series is in the works, and hinted that they might not release as many big, plastic peripherals this year.

According to Ars Technica, Call of Duty 7 will renew Activision Blizzard's annual assault on holiday sales charts in 2010. This isn't a huge surprise - the company has released a new Call of Duty game every single year for the past five years. However, they've never released a Call of Duty with a subscription plan, and that may change soon. During the conference call, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said, "If you think about the success we've had in other product categories on subscription, you can get a sense of the direction that we want to take that franchise."

That's right, Activision Blizzard is pondering a Calling Plan of Duty, though you probably won't see one in this year's game. That's because it's in development at traditionally conservative Treyarch Studios, not Infinity Ward, which made last year's best-selling game. Furthermore, Destructoid quotes a source which claims that Infinity Ward is hard at work on a Call of Duty massively-multiplayer online game, which certainly fits the profile of a subscription-based title.

The only reason why blizzard is loosing money for there biggest hit World of Warcraft and they're are not devoted players anymore so to make money COD will be a subscription kind of game.

oh boy :S this could mean anything, as much as i do hate IW, they can do some things right with there games, and i think this could be bad in the future for CoD

Yea right, if they do this i'll only buy the game for offline play on campaign

I pay 2.50 for a game, so I'm not worried about that :p. I think if they actually make a subscription based game it will make it a funner game. Alot of the little kids won't be able to play because their parents won't want to play. I think if IW does this right, and doesn't mess up like they have with MW2 it could be a really good game.

I am confused are they talking about having to pay a fee just to play the game online? And is this for xbox360 or just for PC?

It would be a piss off having to pay a double fee on top of having to purchase the game itself but they have yet to let us down with a Call of duty game yet they keep going up and a straight multi player in my books would probably be a spectacular addition to the series and would probably blow our goddamn minds considering the fact that the multi player is already awesome I think if they pool all of their resources into making one mode not splitting it into 3 small ones we are going to be surprised on what they do
