Apple buys developer of original Kinect tech

4.7
Apple of iProduct fame has acquired PrimeSense, the Israeli firm behind the 3D sensing tech in the original Kinect for Xbox 360. No official price tag was put on the purchase, but rumors of the acquisition last week speculate a cost of $345 million.

"Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans," said Apple to the BBC.

PrimeSense noted the acquisition to Engadget in a brief statement, "We can confirm the deal with Apple. Further than that, we cannot comment at this stage."

The current Kinect bundled with Xbox One does not use PrimeSense's tech and was developed in-house at Microsoft.

sir_greco Probably some bullshoot way for Apple to try and sue microsoft for something. Since thats all they do. Sue the competition and make everyone buy the same phone every year. Pity ppl fall for it.

There are reasons why they sue.

If you create a product, you don't want your hard work taken away.

Funny how every iPhone and iPad has Samsung hardware in it. And copied them? It's a rectangle shape. They don't own that shape.

HAHA thats funny "They don't own that shape." I don't think any of Apples products look like any thing from Samsung..

What would they wanna do to there products to have to have the Kinect's 3D sensing designer on board with Apple, and their products?

interesting to see what apple will do with this kind of technology.

They probably didn't pay a lot of money for the company, especially compared to what Apple has!

It's funny how in reality that price tag is only a penny compared to how much money they have!

They see the value in smaller technology companies that not others see. Good on Apple

The case wasn't on the shape of the product... It was on the look. And you can clearly tell the similarities so they did have a case considering their design IS patented. Wouldn't you be pissed if someone stole your idea? However, that is an outdated article so it's relevancy is minimal at this point. And the hardware that is manufactured by Samsung within iPhones is something totally different. The lawsuit was on the aesthetics, not the hardware.
