Struggling games and film retailer collapses for second time in a single year

Blockbuster UK has entered into administration for the second time this year, its owner has announced, resulting in the cancellation of Xbox One and PS4 pre-orders.

Private equity firm Gordon Brothers Europe, which bought Blockbuster UK out of administration in January, says poor trading conditions and uncooperative prospective partners are to blame for the new setback.

Those who pre-ordered an Xbox One or PS4 through Blockbuster UK have been told the retailer will no longer honour them. A representative for the retail chain has apologised for the inconvenience via Twitter. A spokesperson told CVG that customers who placed pre-orders are advised to visit the store where they made their order.

The second collapse of Blockbuster UK marks the struggles that game and film retailers face in an increasingly prevalent market of online content and digital downloads.

Fellow UK media retailer HMV also fell into administration in January. It was acquired by Hilco in April.

LaserShow I feel sorry for people losing jobs at this time of year, I also feel sorry for anybody who had next gen consoles on preorder both those who have placed either a full or partial deposit and face losing money and/or trying to source a launch edition console at this stage


It's a lose, lose situation at that. But yeah, I agree. It's sad to see any company go out of business.

I think it was one of them reserve only type of pre orders that they were offering. I think you paid a deposit and you'd pay when the shipped it...

Axe Blockbuster went out of business in the states a few years ago.

I didn't even know that there were still stores in the UK.


same i thought it was a worldwide thing only reason they went out of buisness is cuz nobody needs to rent dvds anymore when u can do it all from your house


No block buster has still been going for a while but now we have netflix and blinkbox online so we can rent them for cheaper and faster :/


sad to see something so useful before become nearly obsolete before we know it gamestop will be going out of buisness


I didn't even know some of the Blockbusters, went out of business, in a few states! It still seems to be doing pretty good from where I live!


the ones in my area closed like 2 years ago kinda miss them though that gamepass was well worth the 20$ a month
Most stores closed down about 5 years ago here in the UK. I didn't know that Blockbuster was a US company too! :o

i pre ordered the xbox one day one edition 4 months ago.. and now this happens. such short notice! now i have no chance with getting another day one edition with only 20 days left untill launch. very disappointed with blockbuster
