Nintendo confirms cross-platform play for Wii U and 3DS

Platform holder says it is "possible" for games to interact with non-Nintendo formats

Nintendo has confirmed to Develop that developers can create Wii U and 3DS titles that will connect with rival platforms.

Earlier this week, UK developer Ripstone claimed that it was working on a title that would let Wii U owners play against smartphone users.

Now the platform holder has told Develop that not only is it possible to make cross-platform games, but that it is keen for studios to do so.

"We can confirm that cross-platform functionality is possible in certain titles that play on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, as well as other video game systems not made by Nintendo," a spokesperson told Develop.

"We are committed to helping developers realise the full potential of their software on Nintendo systems."

Earlier this week, Microsoft's Phil Spencer hinted that cross-platform play may also be possible between Xbox One, PC and mobiles.

This is gonna be hot stuff for Nintendo until Sony and Microsoft do something similar :/

The Wii U is pretty cool, but not many people like it/buy it.

I still don't understand why they keep trying.

Rano Wii U actually looks very cool.

It's a pretty cool console but it doesn't really hold many benefits over its competitors (other then Nintendo exclusives). Looks like it's starting to take a step forward though

To me, the Wii U looks like a blown up DS anyway, and I don't mean in a bad way. However, I think the technical specs of 3DS could limit the titles that can be made cross platform playable between Wii U, and the 3DS (but hey, the next SSB is coming out for both systems). There's also the problem with Nintendo user account system, I think. Vita, and PlayStation home consoles won't have that much problem since they were built with this in mind (the PS4, and Vita at least).

Dreams how is the wii u? i have a 3ds now but only really use for pokemon

I had the Wii U for awhile and it was pretty fun, but not worth the price.

yea i figured if i were to get one it would just be for casual games

In my opinion buying the original Wii would be the better option. They are much cheaper then the Wii U and have some great casual games
